Key facts

Which codes identify Florida's general contractor category?

The construction industry page at DBPR gives the category and its scope together: "CG and RG – A “general contractor” means a contractor whose services are unlimited as to the type of work which he or she may do."

Source: Florida DBPR, Construction Industry, read 22 October 2026.

Use that category wording when discussing the proposed work. A general contractor lookup is an optional public-record step.

How does the building contractor category differ?

The same DBPR page describes the building category in these words: "CB and RB– A “building contractor” means a contractor whose services are limited to the construction of commercial buildings and single-dwelling or multiple-dwelling residential buildings. These buildings cannot exceed three stories in height."

Source: Florida DBPR, Construction Industry, read 22 October 2026.

It separately describes remodeling work: "A building contractor is also a contractor whose services are limited to remodeling, repair, or improvement of any size building – if the services do not affect the structural elements of the building."

What does DBPR say about the residential contractor category?

DBPR gives the residential category its own codes and definition: "CR and RR – A “residential contractor” means a contractor whose services are limited to construction, remodeling, repair, or improvement of one-family, two-family, or three-family residences which are not more than two stories and the “accessory use structures” in connection with these buildings."

Our suggestion is to keep the category name with your estimate, so a conversation about general contracting does not lose the exact license type being discussed.

How can you search for the GC number?

DBPR's Online Services offers Search by License Number and Search by License Type.

For a homeowner comparing an estimate with a license record, these are practical suggestions, not agency requirements.

  1. Request the license number alongside the proposed contract.
  2. Choose Search by License Number on DBPR's Online Services and enter that number.
  3. Compare the category with the GC wording above; ask about any difference between the category supplied and the work proposed.
  4. Keep your search notes with the estimate, including questions you still need to resolve.
