How do you check a handyman license in Florida?

Florida's Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) answers this in its construction FAQs: small handyman jobs under a set cost limit, of a casual, minor or inconsequential nature, are exempt from State licensure. For other work, you can look a contractor up on DBPR's Online Services search, by name or by license number, as an optional public-record step.

The license lookup is yours to run on the state's site.

Key facts

Can a Florida handyman take small jobs without a state license?

The construction industry FAQs on DBPR's site, read 22 October 2026, answer this in one line: "As of July 1, 2020, handyman jobs where the total construction costs are below $2,500 are exempt from State licensure requirements when the jobs are of a casual, minor, or inconsequential nature."

Source: Florida DBPR, Construction Industry FAQs, read 22 October 2026.

The same answer adds a note on permits: "Typically, work requiring a permit is not of a casual, minor, or inconsequential nature."

It also sends you to local rules: "Check with your building department to see whether the jobs so qualify and whether there are any local licensing requirements."

What does Florida Statutes section 489.103 say about minor work?

The Florida Senate's copy of the 2026 Florida Statutes, read 22 October 2026, lists the exemptions in section 489.103, F.S. Subsection (9) reads: "Any work or operation of a casual, minor, or inconsequential nature in which the aggregate contract price for labor, materials, and all other items is less than $2,500, but this exemption does not apply:"

Two cases follow in the same subsection. Paragraph (a) reads: "If the construction, repair, remodeling, or improvement is a part of a larger or major operation, whether undertaken by the same or a different contractor, or in which a division of the operation is made in contracts of amounts less than $2,500 for the purpose of evading this part or otherwise."

Paragraph (b) reads: "To a person who advertises that he or she is a contractor or otherwise represents that he or she is qualified to engage in contracting."

How do you search a Florida contractor on DBPR's Online Services?

The DBPR license search page, read 22 October 2026, asks you to pick a search type first. For a handyman, two of them fit: Search by License Number, when you have a number in writing, and Search by Name, when you only have the name the handyman works under.

DBPR describes what the site holds: "The DBPR Online Services website provides information about applicants and licensed individuals for those professions and businesses that are regulated by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation."

So a name in the results may belong to an applicant, not only to a license holder. And a handyman who takes only jobs within the exemption quoted above may hold no State license at all, so a search can come back empty for them.

What should you ask before a Florida handyman starts a job?

These are practical suggestions, not DBPR rules; the cost limit and the permit point come from the DBPR answer quoted above.

  1. Ask for one written price for the whole job, covering labor, materials and all other items.
  2. Ask whether the job needs a building permit; if you are unsure, ask your city or county building department.
  3. If the handyman gives you a license number, run Search by License Number on DBPR's Online Services.
  4. If you only have a name, run Search by Name instead.
  5. Keep the written price with a note of each search you ran.
