How do you check a contractor license in Idaho?

Idaho registers construction contractors rather than licensing them; the Idaho Contractors Board at DOPL says the Act requires registration, not licensure. To look one up, use Search for a Registration on the Idaho Contractors Board page, which opens DOPL's Online Services public search.

Where do you search an Idaho contractor registration?

From the Idaho Contractors Board page on dopl.idaho.gov, listed in the sources below. The page, read 22 October 2026, links Search for a Registration and File a Complaint Against a Registration to DOPL's Online Services.

Source: Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Idaho Contractors Board page, read 22 October 2026.

On discipline, the board page says: "For information on formal actions against registered contractors, please use the Public Search feature available through Online Services."

Source: Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Idaho Contractors Board page, read 22 October 2026.

The same page notes a change in how long a registration runs: "As of October 14, 2025, this Board has begun transitioning to biennial registration."

Why does Idaho register contractors instead of licensing them?

The board's FAQ on DOPL's site answers that directly: "The Act requires registration, not licensure."

Source: Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Idaho Contractors Board frequently asked questions, read 22 October 2026.

Section 54-5204 of the Idaho Code reads: "On and after January 1, 2006, it shall be unlawful for any person to engage in the business of, or hold himself out as, a contractor within this state without being registered as required in this chapter."

Source: Idaho Code section 54-5204, registration required, read 22 October 2026.

On local programs, section 54-5213 of the Idaho Code reads: "On and after January 1, 2007, no incorporated municipality, county, alternative form of local government, or other municipal or political corporation or subdivision of this state shall implement its own program for the registration or licensure of construction contractors."

The FAQ lists what working without a registration costs a contractor who needed one, including: "No Lien Rights – You waive any right to a lien on real property."

Source: Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Idaho Contractors Board frequently asked questions, read 22 October 2026.

It also lists: "No Building Permits – You cannot obtain a building permit."

Which Idaho jobs and trades sit outside contractor registration?

Small one-off jobs, and trades with their own state license. On who must register, DOPL's FAQ names "Any person who engages in a construction job with a dollar amount exceeding $2000.00 (materials & labor) and is not otherwise exempt".

Source: Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Idaho Contractors Board frequently asked questions, read 22 October 2026.

The exemption list in section 54-5205 of the Idaho Code covers: "A person performing work on one (1) undertaking or project considered casual, minor, or inconsequential, whether by one (1) or more contracts, the aggregate contract price of which, for labor and materials and all other items, is less than two thousand dollars ($2,000)."

Source: Idaho Code section 54-5205, exemptions from registration, read 22 October 2026.

The same paragraph continues: "The exemptions prescribed in this paragraph (f) shall not apply when the work or construction is part of a larger construction project, whether undertaken by the same or a different construction contractor, or in which a division of the operation is made into contracts of amounts of less than two thousand dollars ($2,000) for the purpose of evasion of this chapter or otherwise;"

Source: Idaho Code section 54-5205, exemptions from registration, read 22 October 2026.

For the trades, DOPL's FAQ names holders of other state licenses, plumbers and HVAC installers among them, and tells them: "you do not have to register, unless you are engaged in contracting beyond the scope of your license."

Source: Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Idaho Contractors Board frequently asked questions, read 22 October 2026.

So for electrical, plumbing or HVAC work, the public record to look for may be that trade license rather than a contractor registration.

What should an Idaho contractor show you and hand you?

A registration number, and on a larger home job a written disclosure. Section 54-5214 of the Idaho Code reads: "A contractor registered pursuant to this chapter shall prominently display his contractor registration number for public view in his place of business, on advertising, contracts, permits, company or business letterheads, and purchase orders and subcontracts within sixty (60) days of issue of registration."

Source: Idaho Code section 54-5214, registration display, read 22 October 2026.

Section 45-525 of the Idaho Code reads: "Prior to entering into any contract in an amount exceeding two thousand dollars ($2,000) with a homeowner or residential real property purchaser to construct, alter or repair any improvements on residential real property, or with a residential real property purchaser for the purchase and sale of newly constructed property, the general contractor shall provide to the homeowner a disclosure statement setting forth the information specified in this subsection."

Source: Idaho Code section 45-525, residential disclosures by general contractors, read 22 October 2026.

Two of the items that statement must include, in the section's own words: "The homeowner or residential real property purchaser shall have the right at the reasonable expense of the homeowner or residential real property purchaser to require that the general contractor obtain lien waivers from any subcontractors providing services or materials to the general contractor;"

Source: Idaho Code section 45-525, residential disclosures by general contractors, read 22 October 2026.

And: "The homeowner or residential real property purchaser shall have the right to receive from the general contractor proof that the general contractor has a general liability insurance policy including completed operations in effect and proof that the general contractor has worker’s compensation insurance for his employees as required by Idaho law;"

What should you ask an Idaho contractor before you search?

Get the registration number, or the trade license for electrical, plumbing or HVAC work; a search is then an optional public-record step you can take yourself in DOPL's Online Services before you sign. These are practical suggestions, not DOPL rules.

  1. Ask for the contractor registration number and look for it on the contract and the business's advertising, two of the places in the section 54-5214 quotation above.

Source: Idaho Code section 54-5214, registration display, read 22 October 2026.

  2. For electrical, plumbing or HVAC work, ask which trade license the business holds, since DOPL's FAQ says those license holders do not have to register.

Source: Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Idaho Contractors Board frequently asked questions, read 22 October 2026.

  3. For a small job, ask for the full price of the whole project, labor and materials together, to compare with the exemption limit quoted above.

Source: Idaho Code section 54-5205, exemptions from registration, read 22 October 2026.

  4. Use Search for a Registration on the board page and read what the record shows for that name or number.

Source: Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Idaho Contractors Board page, read 22 October 2026.

  5. Use the same public search for any formal actions, as the board page suggests.

Source: Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, Idaho Contractors Board page, read 22 October 2026.

  6. On a home job above the amount in section 45-525 (quoted above), ask for the disclosure statement before you sign and keep your copy.

Source: Idaho Code section 45-525, residential disclosures by general contractors, read 22 October 2026.

  7. Note the day you searched and what it showed, and keep it with your contract.
