How do you search plumbing licences in Iowa?

Use the Iowa Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board’s public search to look up plumbing records. The portal separates business searches from individual searches: use Facility for a business and the name fields for an individual. Contractor registration and the board’s contractor licence are separate requirements, so keep those records distinct.

Key facts

iowa plumbing license lookup online?

Start with the plumbing public search for Iowa, reached from the DIAL contractor page. It opens the Iowa Regulatory Licensing portal shared by DIAL and HHS Public Health. Use Public Search for the lookup; the portal also has separate application and account links. The search instructions say: “You can select as many or few of the available search criteria as needed to refine your search.” Public Search instructions, read 1 November 2026.

Source: Public Search instructions, read 1 November 2026.

Begin with the detail you already have rather than filling every box. The form includes Program and Program Detail. Its instruction for Program Detail is: “In order to use this field, you must first select a Program in the Program field.” This order matters when narrowing a search to a particular kind of plumbing record. The form also publishes a Classification field for further selection within a program.

The search help explains the Status filter: “These fields allow you to see all Licenses at a certain status. (e.g. active, expired)” Those are search-help examples, rather than a finding about anyone you plan to hire. Read the status on the record exactly as the portal displays it; take questions about its meaning to the board.

iowa plumbing license lookup by name?

The Iowa portal uses the label Facility for a business-name search. Its explanation reads: “If you want to search by the name of a Business, enter here. Please note many facilities have similar names and some facilities will have multiple records to accommodate various license types.” A business name belongs in that field. Use the spelling on the proposed contract to decide what to enter. Iowa Public Search, Facility instructions, read 1 November 2026.

For an individual, use the separate First Name and Last Name fields. The First Name help says: “First name of an Individual. If you want to search for a Business use the Facility Field.” This distinction helps keep the business you are considering hiring separate from a person working for it. A search of one name should not become a conclusion about the other.

iowa plumbing contractor license search?

Keep the contractor licence and contractor registration apart when reviewing paperwork. DIAL’s contractor page describes registration and then says: “These requirements are separate from the requirements for contractor licensure with the Plumbing & Mechanical Systems Board (PMSB).” Ask for the board record associated with the business you are considering, rather than treating a registration reference as an answer to the plumbing-licence question. DIAL Contractor License, read 1 November 2026.

Iowa’s bond, insurance and licensing-period figures are separate items with separate sources. Read each in its own scope; none is a statement about the outcome of a particular plumbing job.

  1. Surety bond — “A person or entity holding a contractor license must maintain during the licensing period a surety bond issued by an entity licensed to do business in Iowa in a minimum amount of $5,000.” Iowa Administrative Code chapter 431, section 431.3(3), read 1 November 2026.

  2. Public liability insurance — “A person or entity holding a contractor license must maintain during the licensing period public liability insurance issued by an entity licensed to do business in Iowa in a minimum amount of $500,000.” Iowa Administrative Code chapter 431, section 431.3(4), read 1 November 2026.

Source: Iowa Administrative Code chapter 431, section 431.3(4), read 1 November 2026.

  3. Licence period — DIAL’s licensing-period page says: “All Plumbing & Mechanical Systems licenses are on a 3-year license period.” Licensing period, Requirements, read 1 November 2026.

Source: Licensing period: Requirements, read 1 November 2026.

For a complaint, use the PMSB complaint procedure. The board says: “Complaints must be in writing. Verbal complaints and anonymous complaints are not accepted.” Keep your contract, proposed scope and relevant correspondence together when preparing a written account. That practical preparation is separate from searching the licensing portal.

Source: How to File a Complaint, read 1 November 2026.

The same complaint page explains the limit on investigative information: “Iowa law requires all information obtained during the investigation remain confidential. Therefore, the complainant will not be informed of any findings other than the Board's final decision.” Do not interpret a licensing search as a complete account of confidential investigations.

iowa master plumber license lookup?

A master-level record and the business’s contractor record answer different questions. DIAL gives this example: “For example, if you are a licensed master plumber, relinquishing your contractor license does not impact your individual master plumbing license.” Keep the individual search separate from the contractor search when deciding which paperwork you still need. DIAL Contractor License, read 1 November 2026.

Source: Closing Contractor Business/Relinquish License, read 1 November 2026.

The master-of-record relationship is also discipline-specific. The current practice rule reads: “A master may only be a master of record for one contractor in any particular discipline at any one time, except that a contractor or a master may seek prior board approval to serve as the master of record for more than one contractor in a particular discipline.” Iowa Administrative Code chapter 431, section 431.4(1). Iowa administrative rule chapter 431, read 1 November 2026.

If the paperwork is unclear, ask the business which record relates to the plumbing work in your written scope. There is a specific rule about presenting the document: “A licensee will present upon request a copy of the licensee’s board-issued license issued under Iowa Code section 105.12(2).” Iowa Administrative Code chapter 431, section 431.2(4). Use that copy as a starting point for your own public-record lookup.

does a plumber need a license?

For Iowa, begin with the actual licence-creating language, including its reference to exceptions. Iowa Code section 105.10(1) reads: “Except as provided in section 105.11, a person shall not operate as a contractor or install or repair plumbing, mechanical, HVAC, refrigeration, sheet metal, or hydronic systems without obtaining a license issued by the board, or install or repair medical gas piping systems without obtaining a valid certification approved by the board.” Iowa Code chapter 105, read 1 November 2026.

Source: Iowa Code section 105.10(1), read 1 November 2026.

If no record appears, do not turn that search into a verdict. Revisit the business-versus-individual field distinction above, ask for the board-issued document, and bring any question about the quoted exception reference to the board. Keep the proposed plumbing work in your question so that the agency can address the relevant scope.

Before signing, separate these questions in your notes: which business is entering the contract, which plumbing record you are trying to locate, and whether the documents describe the same work. Keep the rule quotations with their section citations rather than replacing them with a general promise about a contractor.
