How do you check a contractor license in Kansas?

Kansas has a state registration for roofing contractors, run by the Attorney General under the roofing registration act, while plumbers, electricians and heating and air conditioning contractors may need a license from the county or city where they work, such as Johnson County. A lookup is an optional public-record step.

Key facts

Which contractors need a state registration certificate in Kansas?

Roofing contractors. The Kansas Revisor of Statutes publishes the roofing law, read 22 October 2026, and section 50-6,121 names it: the sections "shall be known and may be cited as the Kansas roofing registration act."

Source: Kansas Revisor of Statutes, section 50-6,121 (title of the roofing registration act), read 22 October 2026.

The core rule is in section 50-6,123, which reads: "No person shall engage in the business of or act in the capacity of a roofing contractor within this state without having a valid registration certificate as required by this act."

Source: Kansas Revisor of Statutes, section 50-6,123 (certificate required), read 22 October 2026.

The definition in section 50-6,122 covers a person who: "Engages in the business of commercial or residential roofing services for a fee; or (B) offers to engage in or solicits roofing-related services, including construction, installation, renovation, repair, maintenance, alteration and waterproofing."

Source: Kansas Revisor of Statutes, section 50-6,122 (definitions), read 22 October 2026.

Section 50-6,124 names who runs it: "the attorney general is authorized to administer and implement the provisions of this act."

How can you look up a roofer in Kansas?

Section 50-6,136 reads: "The attorney general shall establish a system for the public to confirm roofing contractor registration certificates." The same section adds: "Such system shall include a listing of valid registration certificates".

Source: Kansas Revisor of Statutes, section 50-6,136 (public information system), read 22 October 2026.

You can also look for the number itself. Section 50-6,135 reads: "A roofing contractor shall display such contractor's roofing contractor registration certificate number issued pursuant to this act on each commercial vehicle used for roofing services and upon every business sign, card, correspondence and contract used to solicit and conduct roofing services in this state."

Source: Kansas Revisor of Statutes, section 50-6,135 (display of the certificate number), read 22 October 2026.

When a permit is needed, the same section says "a roofing contractor shall supply the permit-issuing official the roofing contractor's registration certificate number issued pursuant to this act."

A listing is a public record, not a recommendation. Section 50-6,136 says disclosure through the system "shall not be deemed to be an endorsement of any roofing contractor or determination of any facts, qualifications, information or reputation of any roofing contractor by the attorney general".
