Which Louisiana jobs need a state license or registration?
It depends on the kind of job and its value. The board says its statutes provide for four basic license types; its search lets you filter by Commercial, Residential, Mold Remediation or Home Improvement. Its license types page lists residential construction, and home improvement on an existing home, under the Residential license once the project passes the figure quoted below. For smaller home improvement jobs, the FAQ says a home improvement registration is required, and the statute's wording of that band is quoted below.

Asked whether a Commercial license covers building a single home, the FAQ says: "A Residential license with the Residential Construction classification is required for new home construction."

Under Residential, the license types page lists "Residential Construction exceeding $50,000 (including labor and materials) of any residential structure."

For home improvement projects inside a set band of total project amounts, the FAQ says "a home improvement registration is required."

The band also appears, in words, in the statute's definition of a home improvement contractor, and its wording differs a little from the FAQ's. Section 37:2150.1 of the Louisiana Revised Statutes, defining that term, reads: a home improvement contractor "means any person who undertakes or attempts to undertake or submits a price or bid or offers to construct, supervise, superintend, oversee, direct, perform, or in any manner assume charge of a home improvement project for which the project value is at least seven thousand five hundred dollars but less than fifty thousand dollars."

Mold work has its own line on the license types page: "A Mold Remediation license is required for remediation projects with a value of $7,500 or more."

What work is off limits under a home improvement registration?
Structural work. The statute bars a home improvement contractor from structural work integral to a structure's integrity; in its words: "A home improvement contractor shall not perform any structural work that is integral to the structural integrity of any new or existing structure, including but not limited to footings, foundations, outside walls, skeleton, bearing columns and interior load bearing walls, floor slabs, or roofing systems to any type."

In our reading: a home improvement registration does not cover structural work, so if your job includes structural work, you can use the drop-down the FAQ describes to see which types the contractor appears under.

What should you ask a Louisiana contractor before you search?
Ask for the name the contractor works under and any license or registration number, ask what the whole job will cost and whether it includes structural work; then you can search the board's records before you sign, as an optional public-record step. The search fields and the structural limit come from the board and the statute; the order of the steps is a practical suggestion, not a board rule.
