Key facts

How do I use the Minnesota electrician license lookup?

DLI's lookup instructions page, read 1 November 2026, says you can search without an account: you continue as a guest and enter a complete license or registration number.

Source: Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, License and registration lookup, read 1 November 2026.

These steps are practical suggestions, not DLI rules.

  1. Ask for the business license number and the electrician's own license number in writing.
  2. Open DLI's lookup and continue as a guest.
  3. Search the business and the person separately, and keep a note of each number you searched.

How do I look up an electrical contractor license in Minnesota?

DLI's License Lookup Instructions, read 1 November 2026, say on page 3: "All contractor licenses (electrical, plumbing, residential building contractor, remodeler, elevator, HPP, roofer, manufactured homes) are a “business” license even if the contractor is an individual proprietor".

Source: DLI License Lookup Instructions, page 3, read 1 November 2026.

The Minnesota Revisor's copy of section 326B.33, read 1 November 2026, separates the business from the person: "A contractor's license does not of itself qualify its holder to perform or supervise the electrical work authorized by holding any class of personal license."

Source: section 326B.33, subdivision 14, read 1 November 2026.

So our suggestion is to search the business and the person who will do or supervise the work as separate searches.

Can I search for an electrician by name in Minnesota?

Yes. Page 2 of DLI's License Lookup Instructions, read 1 November 2026, says: "Use options in the search criteria drop down such as “License/Registration No”, “Licensee Personal Name”, or “Company Name/DBA”."

For a company search, page 3 of the same instructions says: "Type in just part of a company name – the search will depend on how the name was entered into our licensing system and will provide you with information on all the license records containing the text you enter, so it’s best to type in the primary part of the name and then filter through the records returned by the search to find the right record."
