Which jobs and contractors in Montana may have no license?
A search can come back empty for a business the license rule does not reach. The definition in section 37-45-102 and the exemptions in section 37-45-104, both quoted below, set who that is; ask the contractor which applies before you read anything into an empty search.

Source: Montana Code Annotated, section 37-45-104, exemptions, read 22 October 2026.
The definition covers a business that acts "in the pursuit of an independent business, offers to undertake, undertakes, or submits a bid to construct, alter, repair, add to, subtract from, improve, move, wreck, or demolish for another a building, highway, road, railroad, excavation, or other structure, project, development, or improvement attached to real estate, including the installation of carpeting or other floor covering, the erection of scaffolding or other structures or works, or the installation or repair of roofing or siding;"

The exemptions section opens: "As related to construction contractors, this chapter does not apply:"

On contractors who work alone, its last item reads: "to an independent contractor who has no employees. However, an independent contractor may voluntarily elect to register under this chapter."

DLI's program page says it in short: "All construction contractors with employees must register."

On small jobs, the section reads: "to work or operation on one undertaking or project considered of a casual, minor, or inconsequential nature, by one or more contracts, the aggregate contract price of which, for labor and materials and all other items, is less than $2,500 a job."
Source: Montana Code Annotated, section 37-45-104, exemptions, read 22 October 2026.
It goes on: "The exemption prescribed in this subsection does not apply when the work or construction is only a part of a larger or major operation, whether undertaken by the same or a different construction contractor, or in which a division of the operation is made into contracts of amounts of less than $2,500 a job for the purpose of evasion of this chapter or otherwise."

For your own work on your own home, another reads: "to an owner working on the owner's property, whether occupied by the owner or not, but this exemption does not apply to an owner who is otherwise covered by this chapter who constructs an improvement on the owner's property with the intention and for the purpose of promptly selling the improved property, unless the owner has continuously occupied the property as the owner's primary residence for at least the last 12 months;"

Do Montana cities and counties issue their own contractor licenses?
Not for the same or a similar purpose, under section 37-45-204, quoted below. The same section keeps a local government's general business license that applies to all businesses.

What should you ask a Montana contractor before you search?
Get the business name as it will appear on the contract, whether it has employees, and the full price; a search of DLI's lookup is then an optional public-record step you can take yourself before you sign. These are practical suggestions, not DLI rules.
- Ask for the business name exactly as it will appear on your contract.
- Ask whether the business has employees; DLI's program page says "All construction contractors with employees must register."

- For a small job, ask for the full contract price, labor and materials included, so you can compare it with the limit in section 37-45-104, quoted above.
Source: Montana Code Annotated, section 37-45-104, exemptions, read 22 October 2026.
- For electrical or plumbing work, ask who will do it, and which Montana electrician or plumber license that person works under.
Source: Montana Code Annotated, section 37-45-104, exemptions, read 22 October 2026.
- Search the name in DLI's Licensee Lookup System, keeping in mind the program page's note that some disciplinary actions may not be immediately posted.
Source: Montana Department of Labor & Industry, Construction Contractor License (CCL) Program, read 22 October 2026.
- Note the day you searched and what the search showed, and keep it with your contract.
