Who licenses electricians, plumbers and gas fitters in New Hampshire?

The state's Revised Statutes, as published by the General Court, answer for these three trades. The chapter's definitions spell out who counts as a gas fitter: “"Fuel gas fitter" means a hearth system installation and service technician, a domestic appliance technician, a fuel gas installation technician, a fuel gas service technician, or a fuel gas piping installer regulated by this subdivision.”

Each license names a specialty. The same section reads: "Each license issued by the office shall identify which of the following special licenses or license endorsements apply to the licensee:" Its list runs from hearth system installation and service technician through master, journeyman and apprentice plumber.

Where is the record for a New Hampshire electrician?

On the certificate and in the board's record. Section 319-C:7 reads: "All persons licensed by the office shall receive a certificate which must be publicly displayed at the principal place of business of said electrician, or, if no such place of business, must be carried on his or her person and displayed at any time upon request to any electrical inspector appointed by the board under this chapter, as long as said person continues in the business as herein defined."

When does New Hampshire not ask for a trade license?

Some work falls outside the license requirements. For an owner's own home and electrical work, section 319-C:15 reads: "Nothing in this chapter shall prevent a homeowner from making electrical installations in or about a single family residence owned and occupied by him or her or to be occupied by him or her as his or her bona fide personal abode."

For gas work in an owner's own home, section 153:36 reads: "The license requirements of this subdivision shall not apply to anyone who performs fuel gas fitting within an existing single family, stand alone structure owned and occupied by the person who performs the fuel gas fitting work, and such structure is used as the individual's primary residence."

Source: New Hampshire Revised Statutes Annotated, chapter 153 (mechanical licensing: plumbers and fuel gas fitters), read 22 October 2026.

The same section lists plumbing exceptions under this lead-in: "The license requirements of this subdivision shall not apply to the following persons while performing plumbing work under the circumstances specifically described but shall apply to fuel gas fitting in the same circumstances unless otherwise exempted under this subdivision; provided, however, that plumbing installed or maintained by such persons under such circumstances shall conform to the state plumbing code:"

One of them reads: "To a property owner or the property owner's agent who installs, repairs, or replaces plumbing in the property owner's own single-family detached or townhouse residence, including new construction, or any property owner or property owner's agent who makes minor installations, repairs, or replacements to the owner's property."

Plumbing done as part of some system installs has its own exception in section 153:36: "The plumbing license requirements of this subdivision shall not apply to any person or business entity that performs plumbing in connection with the installation of any heating, cooling, air conditioning or domestic water heating systems, whether solar, oil, gas, or electric, or the installation and servicing of water treatment systems or swimming pools."

What should you ask a New Hampshire contractor before you hire?

For electrical, plumbing or gas work, ask to see the license or certificate and the specialty it names; for anything else, start with your town or city. These are practical suggestions, not rules from the statutes.
