What should you ask a New York home inspector before you book?

Ask for the details you need to search, then run the Licensee Search yourself as an optional public-record step. These are practical suggestions, not Department of State rules.

  1. Ask the inspector, in writing, for the ID on the license and the exact name it is issued under.
  2. With the ID, use the ID search; without it, use the name search and choose HOME INSPECTION as the license type.
  3. If you book through a firm, run the business name search as well, with the same license type.
  4. If nothing comes up, keep in mind that the search lists active licenses only, and raise it with the inspector before the visit.
