How do you check an electrical contractor license in Texas?
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, or TDLR, issues electrician and electrical contractor licenses. Its electricians FAQ points readers to its license database, searchable by name or license number, and that search page shows active licenses only, so a license that is no longer active will not come up.

Where do you look up a Texas electrician or electrical contractor?
TDLR answers this in its electricians FAQ, read 22 October 2026, in one line: "Visit our license database and search for the individual or company by name or license number."
Source: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Electricians Frequently Asked Questions, read 22 October 2026.
The database opens under the heading "TDLR License Data Search (Active Licenses only)", so a blank result may come from a misspelt name, a wrong license type or a license that is no longer active. In our reading, a blank result is a reason to ask the contractor for the exact number, not a finding on its own.

The same FAQ starts from the basic rule: "Anyone who performs electrical work in the state of Texas must be licensed."

Why does an electrical contractor in Texas need a master electrician?
TDLR issues a separate business license to electrical contractors, and its application page describes what that license is for: "Electrical contractors are licensed to engage in the business of designing, installing, erecting, repairing, or altering electrical wires or conductors to be used for light, heat, power, or signaling purposes."
Source: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Apply for a New Electrical Contractor License, read 22 October 2026.
The same page ties the business license to a person: "You must employ a licensed Master Electrician to apply for an Electrical Contractor license. The Master Electrician may also be the business owner."
Source: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Apply for a New Electrical Contractor License, read 22 October 2026.
The FAQ names that person's role: "As an Electrical Contractor, you must either obtain and assign your own Master Electrician license to your company, or employ a licensed Master Electrician to assign their license number to the company as the “Master Electrician of Record.”"

So one job can involve more than one TDLR record: the company's contractor license and the individual license of its master electrician.
When is a Texas electrician license not required by the state?
TDLR keeps an exemptions page, read 22 October 2026, and its entry headed Homeowners reads: "A person who perform electrical work on a dwelling that they own and reside in is not required by the state to be licensed as electricians."
Source: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Exemptions to Electrician Licensing, read 22 October 2026.
The page attaches a note to every exemption on it, saying that "Municipal or regional regulations may override these exemptions".

Cities still matter in other ways. On a city license, the FAQ says: "Yes, but you can only perform electrical work within the city where you are licensed. A municipal license is not valid statewide."

On the state license, the same FAQ says: "A state license is valid anywhere in Texas."

TDLR's compliance guide also says that "TDLR does not perform inspections required for local permitting and code requirements."

What should an electrical contractor's paperwork and truck show in Texas?

On vehicles the guide says: "A licensed contractor (i.e. electrical, sign, residential appliance installation) must display its name and license number on both sides of each vehicle owned or operated by the business, and used in the conduct of electrical work."
Source: Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Electricians Compliance Guide, read 22 October 2026.
It also gives the prefix to look for on an electrical contractor's truck: "The license number for an Electrical Contractor must be preceded by the letters “TECL”:"

What should you ask a Texas electrician before the work starts?
Ask for the company's contractor license number and the master electrician's license number, then search both in the TDLR database. These questions are practical suggestions, not TDLR rules.
- Ask for the electrical contractor license number, and see that it matches the one on the written proposal.
- Ask who the master electrician of record is for the company, and for that person's license number.
- In the TDLR license search, choose the electricians program and search each number, then read the name and the license type on the result.
- Ask your city whether the job needs an electrical permit and an inspection, and who will request them.
- If you plan to do part of the work yourself, ask your city first, since local rules can differ from the state exemptions.
