For homeowners
Vinyl vs wood fence: which fits your home?
Choose vinyl (PVC) for upkeep of a rail fence (UGA rating); wood for choosing a painted color. The right choice depends on how much painting and washing you will do, whether you want to choose the fence color yourself, and whether the fence stands in a wildfire area, close to the house or over mulch.
| Factor | Vinyl (PVC) | Wood |
|---|---|---|
| Upkeep of a rail fence (UGA rating) | Low | Medium (treated 1" x 6" boards) |
| Choosing a painted color | no painting needed: the same color throughout the material | exterior water-based paints come in a wide variety of colors and protect against weather |
| Routine care (UGA) | white PVC rail fences need periodic washing with mildew removing agents, especially in the humid south | paint wooden fences as needed |
| Approximate life of a rail fence in a humid climate (UGA) | 20 years | 10-20 years (treated 1" x 6" boards) |
| Boards (UGA) | a broken PVC board does not leave a jagged end | treated wood is strong and durable and resists rotting |
| Fire spread along the fence (NIST wildfire tests) | vinyl privacy fences did not support significant burning under the tested wind conditions | NIST: fire spread is more likely with wood fences than with fences made of vinyl |
| Mulch at the base of the fence (NIST wildfire tests) | panel, bottom frame and post blackened and distorted along the whole fence | in every case, firebrands ignited spot fires in the target mulch bed |
| Radiant heat from a wildfire (UC ANR) | vinyl fences would likely melt during fire conditions | a plank fence of a high-density species with closely spaced boards can give the building some protection |

What are the negatives of vinyl fencing?
UGA Extension names washing as vinyl's upkeep chore: white PVC rail fences require periodic washing with mildew removing agents, especially in the humid south.
In a wildfire, UC ANR's Fire Network says vinyl fences would likely melt during fire conditions, and in NIST's tests a vinyl privacy fence with mulch at its base blackened and distorted along the entire length of the fence, including panel, bottom frame and post.
The same NIST tests found that vinyl privacy fences did not support significant burning under the tested wind conditions, and with mulch at the base no firebrands were generated.
What is the most durable material for fencing?
UGA Extension's answer is that the type of fence chosen depends on the priorities of the owner; its Table 1, Comparison of Common Fences, rates rail fences, which are popular on horse farms.
For the two materials on this page, the table gives an approximate life in a humid climate of 20 years for PVC rails and 10-20 years for treated 1" x 6" boards, with fence life based on combination of post and wire life expectancy.
UGA also says treated wood is strong and durable and resists rotting, and that a broken PVC board does not present a jagged end as sometimes happens with natural wood planks.
What are the different types of fencing available?
NIST's wildfire fence tests covered fence materials including western redcedar, California redwood, pine, vinyl and wood-plastic composites, in privacy, lattice and good neighbor (board on board) styles.
UGA Extension says the kinds of fences commonly used for horses include rail (plank or PVC), various forms of galvanized and vinyl coated wire, and electric fences.
Besides wooden planks, UGA's rail category takes in split rails with rounded ends that slide into holes in posts, PVC plastic boards, and wooden boards coated with vinyl.
| Priority | Choose |
|---|---|
| a fence with a Low upkeep rating (UGA, rail fences) | Vinyl (PVC) |
| a painted color you choose | Wood |
| a fence less likely to carry fire, in NIST's wildfire tests | Vinyl (PVC) |
| some shielding of the house from a wildfire's radiant heat (closely spaced planks of a high-density species, UC ANR) | Wood |
