What is a ball valve?
A ball valve starts or stops fluid flow by rotating a ball with a hole through it. Most quick-acting models open or close with a quarter turn of the handle.

How Does a Ball Valve Work?
Turning the handle rotates a bored ball inside the valve body. With the bore aligned to the inlet and outlet, fluid passes through; rotating it across the openings stops the flow. Most quick-acting handles make that change in 90°, or one quarter turn. “When the valve handle is turned to open the valve, the ball rotates to a point where the hole through the ball is in line with the valve body inlet and outlet.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-10-31. “Most ball valve actuators are of the quick-acting type, which require a 90° turn of the valve handle to operate the valve.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-10-31.
What is a ball valve according to the DOE handbook?
The DOE handbook defines a ball valve by its moving closure: a ball-shaped disk that rotates to start or stop fluid. The hole through that disk provides the open flow path. The word ball names the internal part, rather than the shape of the outer housing. “A ball valve is a rotational motion valve that uses a ball-shaped disk to stop or start fluid flow.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-10-31.
What are ball valves used for?
A ball valve provides quick on-off control of flow. The DOE handbook describes compact construction and tight sealing with low torque. In its irrigation guidance, University of Florida IFAS also explains that a fully open ball valve presents little pressure loss. Those are distinct operating features of the valve. “In addition to quick, quarter turn on-off operation, ball valves are compact, require no lubrication, and give tight sealing with low torque.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-10-31. “Ball valves are full-flow units and create minimum pressure loss through the valve when fully open.” Source: University of Florida IFAS Extension, read 2026-10-31.
Can ball valves be used for throttling?
Conventional ball valves have poor throttling characteristics: when held partly open, high-velocity flow can erode the exposed seat. University of Florida IFAS makes the exception explicit for valves designed for throttling. A valve that can stop flow should therefore not automatically be treated as a valve designed to regulate it continuously. “Conventional ball valves have relatively poor throttling characteristics.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-10-31. “In a throttling position, the partially exposed seat rapidly erodes because of the impingement of high velocity flow.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-10-31. “Like gate and plug valves, due to nonlinear flow characteristics, ball valves are not recommended for flow regulation unless specifically designed for throttling.” Source: University of Florida IFAS Extension, read 2026-10-31.
What is a full bore valve?
For a ball valve, full bore describes the size of the passage through the ball. The DOE handbook calls this a full port pattern: its bore equals the pipe’s inside diameter. The DOE-sponsored valve-selection report describes the same matching diameter. Full bore is a passage-size description, rather than a statement about the valve’s outer dimensions. “The full port pattern has a ball with a bore equal to the inside diameter of the pipe.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-10-31. “The size of the hole is equal to the inside diameter of the line in which it is inserted (Figures 8 and 9).” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Scientific and Technical Information, read 2026-10-31.
