What is bamboo flooring?
Bamboo flooring is flooring made from bamboo strands or pieces bonded into boards. ATFA’s installation specification describes strand woven, laminated and engineered forms. For a home project, identify the board construction before choosing it: ATFA’s bamboo guide explains that moisture changes board width and that sanding depends on sufficient surface thickness.

Which is the strongest bamboo flooring?
For indentation resistance, strand woven bamboo is the harder construction in ATFA’s 2012 Australian trade guide. That answers the hardness part of “strongest”; it does not promise protection from every kind of damage. The guide notes that even hard bamboo can indent under stiletto heels. “The Janka hardness of laminated product (vertical and horizontal) averages about 7 and for strand woven it is about 14.5.” Source: Australian Timber Flooring Association, read 2026-10-31. “It should be noted that even ‘hard’ bamboo and timber flooring products will indent with ‘stiletto heel’ type loading as shown in the photo.” Source: Australian Timber Flooring Association, read 2026-10-31.
How does ATFA define bamboo flooring?
Bamboo flooring consists of bamboo made into boards. ATFA’s Australian specification describes adhesive-bonded strands as well as horizontally or vertically laminated pieces; University of Florida Extension confirms that the plant itself is a grass used for flooring. “Most flooring is strand woven from cut strands of bamboo bonded together with adhesive, prior to being cut and machined into floorboards.” Source: Australian Timber Flooring Association, read 2026-10-31. “There is also flooring from pieces of bamboo vertically and horizontally laminated together and some engineered flooring that provides additional stability when adhesive fixing to slabs.” Source: Australian Timber Flooring Association, read 2026-10-31. “Bamboo is often compared to trees and shrubs, but it’s actually a fast-growing grass.” Source: University of Florida IFAS Extension, read 2026-10-31.
Is bamboo flooring waterproof?
Treat ordinary bamboo flooring as moisture-sensitive rather than assuming it is waterproof. ATFA’s Australian bamboo guide describes moisture moving into and out of boards and warns that spills left on the surface can damage the flooring. Ask for the exact product’s moisture limitations. “When this occurs in natural products such as bamboo and timber there is an increase in board width with moisture uptake and a decrease with moisture loss.” Source: Australian Timber Flooring Association, read 2026-10-31. “Any spill needs to be wiped up as soon as it occurs.” Source: Australian Timber Flooring Association, read 2026-10-31. “Failure to do so can dull or discolour the finish and if left for a long period can damage the flooring.” Source: Australian Timber Flooring Association, read 2026-10-31.
Can bamboo be refinished?
Possibly, but establish the construction and remaining surface thickness first. ATFA’s Australian bamboo guide makes sufficient lamella or veneer thickness a condition for sanding back. Ask a flooring professional to assess the actual board before including sanding in a refurbishment scope. “In other instances it may be desirable to sand back to bare timber, however it must first be ascertained that the flooring product has a sufficiently thick lamella or veneer for this to be possible.” Source: Australian Timber Flooring Association, read 2026-10-31.
Can I clean bamboo flooring with a steam mop?
ATFA’s Australian bamboo care guidance says to avoid steam mops and scrubbing machines. For your home, request the flooring product’s written cleaning instructions and choose equipment that follows them; the care section’s warning is explicit. “Do not use steam mops (irrespective of what the product sales people may say) or any form of scrubbing machine.” Source: Australian Timber Flooring Association, read 2026-10-31.
