What are chair rails used for?

Chair rail can protect the wall from chair backs and add a horizontal decorative detail. The U.S. International Trade Commission’s 2020 report identifies both architectural interest and protection against dents and scuffs: “These moulding types are intended to add architectural interest to a room and are typically used on a flat surface—wall frame moulding creates a picture frame on the flat wall (Figure I-5).” Source: U.S. International Trade Commission, read 2026-10-31. “Some of these applications are not only decorative; chair rail is moulding that protects walls from dents and scuffs from the backs of chairs; it is attached horizontally around a room’s perimeter at about the height of the top of a typical chair, or about 36-inches (Figure I-6).” Source: U.S. International Trade Commission, read 2026-10-31.

What is a chair rail in the federal wood-molding description?

The 1966 U.S. International Trade Commission report describes chair rail by its position on the wall. The term refers to interior molding rather than part of a chair. Its historical definition reads: “The chair rail here mentioned is not a chair part, but a type of molding applied on a wall at chair-back height.” Source: U.S. International Trade Commission, read 2026-10-31.

Where should a chair rail be positioned on a wall?

Height depends on the room and the design approach. JLC’s 2017 trade article gives 26 to 32 inches as a starting range. The federal report’s approximately 36-inch description above illustrates a different convention; these are design descriptions rather than a single required dimension: “The short answer to this question is, somewhere between 26 to 32 inches.” Source: Journal of Light Construction, read 2026-10-31.

What about the material and design for chair rails?

Wood is a documented chair-rail material. In its 1966 description, the U.S. International Trade Commission places chair rail among standard wood moldings, which can be one piece or end-glued. The report’s examples describe the material category rather than a complete list of today’s products: “Standard moldings are ordinarily long narrow strips of wood, either in one piece or end-glued (as by finger-jointing), used to cover the joints around doors and windows, at the juncture of the walls with floors and ceilings, and otherwise.” Source: U.S. International Trade Commission, read 2026-10-31. “Some examples of such moldings are casing, crowns and beds, coves, baseboard, picture molding (a separate article from picture-frame molding), chair rail, rounds, quarter rounds, and door jambs not dadoed.” Source: U.S. International Trade Commission, read 2026-10-31.

How wide should a chair rail be?

The U.S. International Trade Commission’s 2020 report describes standard chair-rail molding as 2-1/4 inches wide. That is the width of the molding strip itself, separate from its height above the floor; the passage gives a product description rather than a required size for every room: “Standard chair-rail moulding is 2-1/4 inches wide.” Source: U.S. International Trade Commission, read 2026-10-31.
