What is a circuit breaker?
A circuit breaker is a resettable safety switch that disconnects a circuit when current is too high. Home lighting and outlet circuits may be rated 15 or 20 amperes, a measure of electrical current. A higher-rated breaker can leave wiring overloaded, so replacement must suit the circuit it protects.

What this means for your home project
- Read the breaker’s current rating on its handle or surrounding face; UL places that marking there for breakers rated 100 amperes or less. Source: UL Solutions, read 2026-11-04.
- Look for the tripped indication to identify a breaker whose handle has stopped in an intermediate position. Source: UL Solutions, read 2026-11-04.
- Request a written replacement scope naming the proposed breaker’s catalog number, pole count, electrical ratings and matching panel from its compatibility list. Source: UL Solutions, read 2026-11-04.
- Have an electrician perform an AFCI installation rather than attempting the panel work yourself. Source: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, read 2026-11-04.

Can I replace a 15 ampere circuit breaker with a 20 ampere breaker?
A higher rating needs an assessment of the wiring it protects, because changing the protective device can leave the circuit exposed to overload. “Your electrical panel has 25 ampere or higher rated fuses or circuit breakers installed that control 15 or 20-ampere rated lighting and receptacle outlet circuits.” Source: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, read 2026-11-04. “These overrated devices allow overloading of your branch circuits that can lead to fire.” Source: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, read 2026-11-04.
Can I replace a circuit breaker with a different circuit breaker?
For a different replacement, ask your electrician to document the equipment match using UL’s marking guide, section 99, before selecting the device. “Compatibility List – The referenced publication is a compatibility list which tabulates the company name, catalog number, number of poles and electrical ratings of the Classified circuit breaker, in addition to the company name and catalog number of the applicable UL Certified (Listed) panelboards, and corresponding UL Certified (Listed) circuit breakers in place of which the Classified circuit breaker has been investigated.” Source: UL Solutions, read 2026-11-04. “The Classified circuit breaker is not suitable for the specified application if the system supply characteristics exceed the maximum values indicated in the compatibility list.” Source: UL Solutions, read 2026-11-04.
What does that TEST button on a circuit breaker do?
On a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) breaker, use the test control to exercise its shock-protection mechanism rather than to add another electrical load. “When the test switch is depressed, a current simulating a ground fault is caused to flow and this should cause the internal mechanism to function to trip the breaker.” Source: UL Solutions, read 2026-11-04.
Should you install AFCIs?
An arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) upgrade addresses sparking hazards that ordinary overload protection can miss, and may fit the panel you already have. “Typical household fuses and circuit breakers do not respond to early arcing and sparking conditions in home wiring.” Source: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, read 2026-11-04. “Sometimes these components can be replaced with AFCIs in the existing electrical panel box.” Source: U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, read 2026-11-04.
How do I identify a tripped circuit breaker?
Read the device’s status indication before assuming a handle near the on position means the circuit still has power. “Trip and Reset – If a circuit breaker handle takes an intermediate position when tripped, the breaker is marked to indicate it is tripped.” Source: UL Solutions, read 2026-11-04. “Instructions for resetting the breaker are also required to be marked.” Source: UL Solutions, read 2026-11-04.
