What is closed cell spray foam?

Closed cell spray foam is rigid polyurethane insulation sprayed into place. Its closed cells trap an insulating gas, and sufficient finished thickness can also make it an air barrier.

Can SPF be used as an air barrier?

The Department of Energy floor guide gives 1.5 inches as the minimum finished thickness for closed-cell foam to qualify as an air barrier in its guidance for floors above unconditioned space. “To qualify as an air barrier, open-cell or closed-cell foam must have a finished thickness greater than or equal to 5.5 inches or 1.5 inches, respectively.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, Building Science Education, read 2026-10-31.

What does SPFA say closed cell spray foam is?

The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance describes closed-cell spray foam as rigid foam with gas trapped inside its cells. Its cited density range is 1.8–2.3 pounds per cubic foot. “Closed-cell spray foam (ccSPF) has a closed cell structure which yields a rigid, hard foam, with a density of 1.8-2.3 pound per cubic foot (pcf), and has been demonstrated to provide structural enhancement in certain framed buildings.” Source: Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance, read 2026-10-31. “These smaller cells trap an insulating gas, called a blowing agent.” Source: Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance, read 2026-10-31.

Does SPF emit volatile organic compounts (VOCs)?

EPA's archived guidance describes uncertain off-gassing behavior and lingering vapors after application; it does not establish a universal emissions clearance time for closed-cell foam or other SPF products. “The potential for off-gassing of volatile chemicals from spray polyurethane foam is not fully understood and is an area where more research is needed.” Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (archived guidance), read 2026-10-31. “After application, vapors may linger in a building until properly ventilated and thoroughly cleaned.” Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (archived guidance), read 2026-10-31.

What fire protection measures (thermal or ignition barriers) are required for SPF?

SPFA describes thermal barriers between spray polyurethane foam and occupied interiors, with exceptions, and ignition barriers for some limited-access spaces. Its FAQ names a 15-minute thermal barrier and ½-inch gypsum board as an example. “SPF, like many construction materials, is combustible, and can ignite when subjected to heat or flame.” Source: Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance, read 2026-10-31. “For this reason, model building codes require that SPF materials (with some exceptions) must be separated from interior (occupied) spaces by a 15-minute thermal barrier, such as ½” gypsum board.” Source: Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance, read 2026-10-31. “In limited access areas like crawlspaces and attics, an ignition barrier may be permitted in place of a thermal barrier.” Source: Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance, read 2026-10-31.

Can SPF be used with Other Insulations (Hybrid Insulation Systems)?

SPFA explicitly identifies fiberglass, cellulose and foam board as materials that can accompany closed-cell foam in a hybrid insulation assembly. “Closed-cell SPF can be used in combination with other insulation materials such as fiberglass, cellulose and foam board products.” Source: Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance, read 2026-10-31.
