What is EPDM roofing?

EPDM roofing is a synthetic rubber sheet covering for low-slope roofs; EPDM means ethylene propylene diene terpolymer. It comes in black, gray or white, and its seams use adhesive or tape. For a home roofing proposal, ask which sheet thickness, attachment method and seam system the installer intends to use.

What this means for your home project

  1. Read the roofing proposal and record its EPDM sheet thickness. If it is missing, request a stated thickness so you can distinguish the 45- and 60-mil sheet options described by CRCA. Source: Chicago Roofing Contractors Association, read 2026-11-02.
  2. For a taped seam proposal, request a written splice detail that shows primer followed by tape after the primer has dried. Look for both the preparation and the sequence in the reply. Source: EPDM Roofing Association, read 2026-11-02.
  3. For the WeatherBond system described here, request walkway-pad locations in the bid for areas exposed to regular rooftop maintenance. The reply should identify which maintenance areas receive protection. Source: WeatherBond, read 2026-11-02.
  4. Ask a repair proposal to specify cleaning and priming of the existing EPDM before applying the pressure-sensitive repair product. Look for that preparation sequence in the written repair scope. Source: EPDM Roofing Association, read 2026-11-02.

How thick is EPDM rubber roofing?

EPDM sheets are available in 45, 60 and 90 mil thicknesses. A mil is 0.001 inch, so a 60-mil sheet is 0.060 inch thick; a higher number means a thicker sheet. Look for a stated thickness in the proposal rather than just the words rubber roofing. CRCA lists the 45- and 60-mil options, while ERA also lists 90 mil. “EPDM is available in 45 and 60 mil thickness as roofing materials.” Source: Chicago Roofing Contractors Association, read 2026-11-02.

Can you join EPDM rubber roofing?

Yes. EPDM sheets can be joined with liquid adhesive or splice tape. For the tape method, ERA describes priming the adjoining sheets and applying the tape after the primer dries. Ask the installer to name the proposed seam system and preparation in writing. For comparing installation scope, DOE identifies roof size, complexity, attachment method and location among the factors affecting installed cost. “Two methods of splicing are currently available using either liquid adhesive or splice tape.” Source: EPDM Roofing Association, read 2026-11-02. “The installed costs of a roof can vary depending on several factors, including its type, size, complexity, method of attachment, and building location.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-11-02.

Can you walk on EPDM rubber roofing?

EPDM can withstand foot traffic associated with servicing roof equipment, according to ERA. WeatherBond’s January 2024 specification uses protective walkway pads in areas exposed to regular rooftop maintenance. For that system, ask the proposal to identify the protected maintenance routes; this describes the roof system, not permission to climb onto a roof. “EPDM withstands and resists damage from foot traffic, construction loads, and servicing mechanical equipment.” Source: EPDM Roofing Association, read 2026-11-02.

How can my EPDM roof be repaired in case of damage?

EPDM can be repaired using pressure-sensitive adhesive products after the existing membrane is cleaned and primed. ERA also describes bonding new material to old reinforced EPDM during its service life, so ask for a repair assessment before deciding the scope of replacement. A useful repair proposal describes the surface preparation and patch material; the bulletin also says repairs need no electrical power. “EPDM can be repaired without access to power and without the need for specialized tools.” Source: EPDM Roofing Association, read 2026-11-02.

TPO vs. EPDM: What's the difference?

TPO, short for thermoplastic polyolefin, is usually white and reflective, while EPDM is typically black but can be made white or in reflective colors. DOE describes cool EPDM made with a reflective coating or laminated surface. Compare the actual proposed finish rather than assuming all rubber roofs are black. For either material, DOE says the possibility of putting a new roof over an existing one depends on roof condition and local building codes. “TPO and PVC membranes are usually white and reflective, and do not require additional formulations or cool coatings.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-11-02. “EPDM membranes are black, but can also be produced in white or cool colors.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-11-02.
