What is an EV charger?

An EV charger supplies electricity to recharge an electric vehicle. In AFDC charging-port terminology, one charger serves one vehicle at a time, even when the port has several connectors.

What are the levels of EV charging?

The three charging levels are AC Level 1, AC Level 2 and DC fast charging. Level 1 uses 120 volts; residential Level 2 uses 240 volts. “Alternating Current (AC) Level 1 equipment (often referred to simply as Level 1) provides charging through a 120 volt (V) AC plug.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy — Alternative Fuels Data Center, read 2026-10-31. “AC Level 2 equipment (often referred to simply as Level 2) offers charging through 240 V (typical in residential applications) or 208 V (typical in commercial applications) electrical service.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy — Alternative Fuels Data Center, read 2026-10-31.

What does EV charger mean in charging-port terminology?

In AFDC terminology, a charger means one charging port serving one vehicle at a time. Several connectors on that port do not mean several vehicles can charge together. “An EV charging port provides power to charge only one vehicle at a time even though it may have multiple connectors.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy — Alternative Fuels Data Center, read 2026-10-31.

How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle?

Charging has no single fixed duration. AFDC describes a range from under 20 minutes to 20 hours or more, depending on the equipment and vehicle. “The charging time can range from less than 20 minutes using DC fast chargers to 20 hours or more using Level 1 chargers, depending on these and other factors.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy — Alternative Fuels Data Center, read 2026-10-31.

Can I use any charger?

No single connector fits every charging situation. EPA says compatibility depends on the vehicle’s port and the connectors or adapters it supports, particularly for DC fast charging. “Vehicles’ charging ports vary by auto manufacturer, so make sure to check which connectors and adapters are compatible with your vehicle before charging.” Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, read 2026-10-31.

What does it mean when some chargers list amperage (amp) and some list kilowatts (kW)?

Amps describe electric current, while kilowatts describe power. The vehicle also limits the charging rate: EPA gives the example of a 30-amp vehicle using an 80-amp charger. “If you own a PEV with a 30-amp charging limit, it doesn’t benefit from using a charger that can supply 80 amps.” Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, read 2026-10-31.

Can I charge at home?

Yes. The NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission describes Level 1 and Level 2 as the most common home charging arrangements, using 120-volt and 240-volt supplies respectively. “Level 1 charging only requires a 120-volt outlet.” Source: NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, read 2026-10-31. “Level 2 chargers require a 240-volt outlet and some modifications to your existing electrical infrastructure.” Source: NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission, read 2026-10-31.
