What are frameless cabinets?
Frameless cabinets have no face frame across the front of the cabinet box. The cabinet body provides attachment points for doors and hardware, and its edges are usually edgebanded.

How thick should the cabinet box and shelves be for long-term durability?
For frameless cabinet boxes, KCMA A161.1-2022 requires enough thickness to pass its physical performance tests; section 2.6.3 does not set one universal panel thickness. Shelves have their own requirements: AWI 0641 section 3.2.4.1 specifies a 19.1 mm minimum for pullout shelves, rather than every kind of shelf. “For frameless cabinets, the sides, tops/bottoms, and backs shall be of thickness necessary to provide rigid construction to meet physical performance tests.” Source: Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, read 2026-10-31.
How does AWI define frameless cabinets?
AWI defines frameless cabinets by the absence of a face frame at the front of the box. Its section 3.2.1.2 also describes the body edges as usually edgebanded, with the body itself providing attachment points for doors and hardware. “Frameless construction is a casework construction type without a face frame.” Source: Architectural Woodwork Institute, read 2026-10-31.
What are frameless cabinets made from?
Frameless describes the cabinet construction, rather than one required wood product. AWI 300 lists plywood, particleboard and medium density fiberboard among panel materials with reference standards; its core selection rule leaves room for different specifications. A cabinet description therefore needs the actual core material as well as the word frameless. “Core shall be of manufacturer/supplier’s choice.” Source: Architectural Woodwork Institute, read 2026-10-31.
Do frameless (European-style) cabinets meet the same standards?
Frameless cabinets are eligible for the ANSI/KCMA A161.1 quality certification seal. Eligibility describes a construction category; it does not establish that every cabinet sold in that category has earned the seal. The KCMA FAQ explicitly includes frameless construction. “Yes, both framed and frameless cabinets are eligible for the ANSI/KCMA A161.1 quality certification seal.” Source: Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, read 2026-10-31.
What are overlay and reveal, and why do they matter?
Overlay concerns how a door covers the cabinet front; reveal concerns the space left visible around the fronts. These details affect the finished appearance of frameless cabinets. AWI separates reveal-overlay and flush-overlay frameless designs; in section 3.4.2.2, Figure 43, its Y dimension depends on hinge overlay. The figure dimensions describe that interface, rather than a universal gap for every cabinet. ““Y” shall be determined by the hinge overlay.” Source: Architectural Woodwork Institute, read 2026-10-31.
