What is a gabion wall?

A gabion wall is a stack of wire-mesh baskets filled with rock. The baskets form a retaining structure that helps stabilize soil.

Where are gabions and gabion walls used?

Gabions hold back soil and protect banks from erosion. Queensland describes a vertical or terraced arrangement of stacked baskets against a riverbank; the site’s erosion pattern determines whether that arrangement is suitable. “The gabion baskets are often placed on top of one another in the form of a vertical or terraced retaining wall against a riverbank to prevent further erosion of the bank.” Source: Queensland Government, read 2026-10-31.

What is a gabion wall made of?

Gabion walls contain rock inside wire mesh baskets. Queensland’s riverbank guidance describes rectangular baskets and gives a typical fill diameter of 100–250 mm; that description is specific to its waterway setting. “Gabion baskets are typically rectangular wire mesh baskets filled with small rock of approximately 100-250mm in diameter.” Source: Queensland Government, read 2026-10-31.

What Are The Advantages Of Gabions?

Gabions allow water to pass through and can accommodate some movement. Alabama’s streambank guidance describes these qualities together with the labor needed to construct the baskets; permeability alone does not establish a wall’s stability. “These rock-filled wire baskets are very labor intensive to construct, but they are semi-flexible and permeable.” Source: Alabama Department of Transportation, read 2026-10-31.

What type of rock fill is recommended for gabions?

For projects using USDA NRCS guidance, rock must stay inside the basket and resist deterioration. Its March 2025 handbook describes an 85-percent-by-weight grading requirement and a predominant gabion rock range of four to eight inches. These are project specification values, rather than a universal size for every basket. “For the gabions to function correctly over the design life of the project, the rock must be graded so that it is retained within the structure and has the durability to prevent excessive degradation over time.” Source: USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, read 2026-10-31. “CS-64 states that 85 percent of the rock particles by weight must fall within the predominant rock size range.” Source: USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, read 2026-10-31. “For gabions, they must be four to eight inches.” Source: USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, read 2026-10-31.

Is it possible to add vegetation to a gabion wall?

Yes. Alabama describes vegetated rock gabions as baskets combined with live branches. Its particular slope-toe practice has a height limit below 5 feet, including the footing, and does not resist large lateral earth stresses. That limited application should not be read as a specification for every retaining wall. “Vegetated gabions combine layers of live branches and gabions (rectangular baskets filled with rock).” Source: Alabama Department of Transportation, read 2026-10-31. “It is not designed to resist large, lateral earth stresses.” Source: Alabama Department of Transportation, read 2026-10-31. “Overall height, including the footing, should be less than 5 feet.” Source: Alabama Department of Transportation, read 2026-10-31.
