What is a glazier?

A glazier is a tradesperson who cuts, fits and installs glass in buildings. IUPAT’s trade description includes windows, doors, curtain walls and facades. For a home project, that can mean work on a shower enclosure, mirror or window glass, with measurements and glass specifications defining what must fit.

What this means for your home project

  1. Ask who will take and record the glass measurements before cutting or ordering. O*NET lists measuring and marking cutting lines as a glazier task. Source: O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, read 2026-10-31.
  2. Ask for the glass type and thickness to be written into the project specification; O*NET connects those details to the drawings or specifications a glazier reads. Source: O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, read 2026-10-31.
  3. For replacement work, ask whether removing the broken glass is included in the scope. O*NET lists that removal before the replacement glass is installed. Source: O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, read 2026-10-31.
  4. Agree on which furniture needs moving and which floors or furnishings will be covered. O*NET lists clearing work areas and using drop cloths among glazier tasks. Source: O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, read 2026-10-31.

Do glaziers only install windows?

No. A glazier’s scope can include shower and bathtub enclosures, skylights and display cases as well as windows. The U.S. O*NET task list specifically includes assembling and attaching metal-framed glass enclosures: “Cut, assemble, fit, or attach metal-framed glass enclosures for showers, bathtubs, display cases, skylights, solariums, or other structures.” Source: O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, read 2026-10-31.

What is a glazier in the IUPAT description?

A glazier is the tradesperson who cuts, fits and installs building glass. The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) describes the trade across both homes and commercial buildings, including the exterior glass systems called curtain walls: “Glaziers and glassworkers install, cut, and fit glass for windows, doors, curtain walls, and facades in commercial and residential buildings.” Source: International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, read 2026-10-31.

Is glazier work dangerous?

Yes. WorkBC, British Columbia’s government employment resource, describes injury risks from cutting tools, broken glass and lifting heavy objects. That is a useful hazard description for discussing glass handling on a home project; it is not a U.S. legal requirement: “Glaziers take safety precautions since there is a risk of injury due to the use of cutting tools or from broken glass.” Source: WorkBC, Government of British Columbia, read 2026-10-31. “Workers are also required to lift heavy objects, which increases the risk of back injury.” Source: WorkBC, Government of British Columbia, read 2026-10-31.

Do glaziers need to understand blueprints?

Yes. O*NET describes reading blueprints or specifications as a glazier task, connecting the drawing to the glass size, shape, color, type and thickness. For your project, ask which drawing or written specification defines those details: “Read and interpret blueprints or specifications to determine size, shape, color, type, or thickness of glass, location of framing, installation procedures, or staging or scaffolding materials required.” Source: O*NET OnLine, U.S. Department of Labor, read 2026-10-31.

What types of glass do glaziers work with?

Washington’s public-works trade definition names tempered glass, laminated glass and insulating glass units among the materials glaziers handle. This is the scope stated in WAC 296-127-01331 for Washington public works; it does not establish glass-selection requirements for every U.S. home: “For the purpose of the Washington state public works law, chapter 39.12 RCW, glaziers select, cut, prepare, handle, install or remove all window glass, plate glass, and all other types of glass, including structural glass, mirror glass, tempered and laminated glass, safety or protection glass, all types of insulating glass units, all plastics or other similar materials when used in place of glass and when set or glazed with putty, moulding rubber, cement, lead and all types of mastic, or other materials used in place of same.” Source: Washington State Legislature, read 2026-10-31.
