What are inset cabinets?

Inset cabinets have doors and drawer fronts fitted inside the cabinet openings, with their faces flush with the surrounding cabinet front. Small gaps allow them to open and close.

Is there a standard gap between inset doors and face frames?

An inset door needs a small operating gap around its edges. The Navy Builder Advanced training text gives 1/16 inch around all four edges in its discussion of flush cabinet doors. That is a documented example, rather than a universal specification for every cabinet system; the project drawings and hardware requirements still matter. “For a finished look, each type of door must be fitted in the cabinet opening within 1/16-inch clearance around all four edges.” Source: U.S. Navy (public document mirror), read 2026-10-31.

What are inset cabinets in the woodwork standards?

Inset describes where the doors and drawer fronts sit when closed: within the cabinet opening, with their faces flush with the surrounding cabinet front. The 2014 Architectural Woodwork Standards glossary calls this flush inset and expressly includes space for operation. A close fit therefore still includes clearance between the moving faces and the cabinet. “FLUSH INSET: Cabinet construction in which the door and drawer faces are set within and flush with the body members or face frames of the cabinet with spaces between face surfaces sufficient for operating clearance.” Source: AWI / AWMAC / Woodwork Institute, read 2026-10-31.

Do inset cabinets require special hinges?

The hinge must suit a door that closes inside the opening. Inset does not name one mandatory hinge design: the Navy training text describes surface hinges made straight for flush doors and butt hinges used when little hardware should show. With its butt-hinge example, only the pin remains visible when the door is closed. “The surface hinge mounts on the exterior surface of the door and frame.” Source: U.S. Navy (public document mirror), read 2026-10-31. “It is made straight for flush doors or offset for lipped doors.” Source: U.S. Navy (public document mirror), read 2026-10-31. “The butt hinge is used on flush doors when little hardware must show.” Source: U.S. Navy (public document mirror), read 2026-10-31. “When it is installed, only the pin of the butt hinge shows when the door is closed.” Source: U.S. Navy (public document mirror), read 2026-10-31.

Can you get inset doors on frameless cabinets?

Yes. The 2014 Architectural Woodwork Standards shows flush-inset diagrams for both frameless and face-frame construction on page 288. Frameless describes the cabinet body; inset describes the position of the moving faces. The glossary definition above includes both body members and face frames, so a face frame is not part of every flush-inset construction. “FRAMELESS construction where the front edge of the cabinet body components are edgebanded.” Source: AWI / AWMAC / Woodwork Institute, read 2026-10-31. “FACE FRAME construction where the front edge of the cabinet body components are overlaid with a frame.” Source: AWI / AWMAC / Woodwork Institute, read 2026-10-31. See the AWI / AWMAC / Woodwork Institute passage quoted above.

Will inset doors stick in humid weather?

They can if swelling consumes the operating clearance. That is an inference from two facts in the 2014 woodwork standards: inset faces need clearance, and wood swells in high humidity. The same document says normal minor fluctuations should have insignificant effects in properly designed construction. AWI care guidance also limits sustained departures from the applicable humidity range to 24 hours; it does not promise that every inset door will stick in humid weather. “In high humidity, wood picks up moisture and swells.” Source: AWI / AWMAC / Woodwork Institute, read 2026-10-31. “As normal minor fluctuations in humidity occur, the resulting dimensional response in properly designed construction will be insignificant.” Source: AWI / AWMAC / Woodwork Institute, read 2026-10-31. “Relative humidity shall not fall outside the acceptable range for a sustained period of more than 24 hours for any reason.” Source: Architectural Woodwork Institute, read 2026-10-31.
