What are insulated concrete forms?
Insulated concrete forms (ICFs) are hollow foam blocks or panels that hold poured concrete in place and remain as wall insulation. Steel reinforcing bars strengthen the concrete inside. Unlike conventional wood or metal forms, the foam stays on the wall; plan window openings and utility entries before the concrete pour.

- Check the foundation plans for the proposed insulation location. If ICFs are impractical for an existing building, request an interior-insulation alternative to compare. Source: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Building America Solution Center, read 2026-11-02.
- Ask for the window schedule and confirm each rough opening accommodates the actual window dimensions before the pour. Source: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Building America Solution Center, read 2026-11-02.

Are there different types of ICFs?
Yes. Flat-wall ICFs produce a continuous concrete thickness, like a conventional poured wall. Waffle-grid walls vary the concrete thickness; screen-grid walls instead form spaced horizontal and vertical concrete columns surrounded by foam. Identify the proposed wall configuration on the drawings before comparing systems. “Flat wall systems yield a continuous thickness of concrete, like a conventional poured wall.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02. “Grid wall systems have a waffle pattern where the concrete is thicker at some points than others.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02. “Screen grid systems have widely spaced horizontal and vertical columns of concrete, which are completely encapsulated in foam.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02.
What are the most typical ICF cavity sizes?
The trade FAQ lists 4-, 6-, 8- and 10-inch concrete cavities as typical manufacturer offerings. The cavity is the space filled with concrete; it is not the finished wall thickness. PNNL says typical walls exceed 1 foot after interior and exterior finishes, so distinguish these dimensions in a bid. “Most ICF companies manufacture forms in 4", 6", 8" and 10" cavity widths.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02. “After finishes are applied inside and out, typical final wall thickness is greater than 1 ft.” Source: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Building America Solution Center, read 2026-11-02.
How much steel reinforcing bar (rebar) do I need?
The amount of reinforcing steel depends on the building design and local building codes; the FAQ gives no single quantity that fits every ICF home. Ask the contractor to identify the reinforcement specified for your building in the written scope, rather than treating a generic bar quantity as your design. “This will be determined by the design parameters of the building, and in accordance with local building codes.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02.
How are doors and windows installed?
A wooden or vinyl buck—a frame around the opening—is incorporated while the ICF wall is stacked, before the concrete pour. Doors and windows follow after curing. PNNL warns that enlarging the opening after concrete sets is costly, so settle the actual window dimensions before pouring. “A wooden or vinyl buck is built and incorporated into the wall as it is being stacked prior to pouring the concrete.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02. “Enlarging a rough opening after the concrete has set is costly.” Source: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Building America Solution Center, read 2026-11-02.
How are utilities installed?
Utility entry points should be identified before concrete is poured so conduits can pass through the wall. Inside, plumbing and electrical lines go into grooves in the foam and are covered by drywall. Ask the written scope to identify the planned entry points before the pour. “The points at which utilities connect to the building should be identified prior to the pour.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02. “Plumbing and electrical lines are then inserted into the grooves and covered by drywall.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02.
Are ICF walls waterproofed?
For below-ground ICF walls, the trade FAQ calls for waterproofing and says to confirm that the selected system can be applied to ICFs. Its examples include sprayed latex, peel-and-stick membranes and dimple sheets. Request the product specification showing ICF compatibility rather than assuming the foam replaces water protection. “As with any form of below-grade construction, waterproofing is required.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02. “Always check with the manufacturers specifications to determine whether their waterproofing can be applied to ICFs.” Source: Concrete Buildings / National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, read 2026-11-02.
