Why do builders use knockdown texture?
Knockdown is a decorative way to make minor surface differences less conspicuous. The Gypsum Association explains this benefit for textured finishes generally; it does not say texture repairs cracks, damaged joints or other defects. In GA-214-2021, the distinction is between concealing minor differences and highlighting them with the paint finish: “In general, non-flat and dark/deep tone paints highlight minor surface differences, whereas textures conceal these minor differences.” Source: Gypsum Association, read 2026-10-31.
What is knockdown texture in the trade-training manual?
Knockdown names a texture that is applied and then flattened with a trowel. The 1983 British Columbia Drywall Finishing Manual describes machine application followed by that flattening step. This is a description of a finish, rather than a US construction requirement: “A knock down texture is one that is applied by machine then "knocked down" with a trowel.” Source: British Columbia Ministry of Education, read 2026-10-31.
Can knockdown texture be painted?
Yes. GA-214-2021 discusses painting textured gypsum surfaces and requires them to be dry first. Its preparation guidance also calls for a priming material before decoration unless the texture manufacturer specifies otherwise. This is general gypsum-panel finishing guidance, so the particular texture material still matters: “Unless otherwise specified by the texture manufacturer, a priming material shall be applied over the finished gypsum panel surface prior to decorating.” Source: Gypsum Association, read 2026-10-31.
How long does knockdown texture take to dry before painting?
GA-214-2021 sets a condition rather than a universal number of hours: the texture must be dry before painting. The captured guidance does not give one drying duration for every knockdown material. A fixed waiting time therefore cannot be inferred from this document: “Textured surfaces must be dry before painting.” Source: Gypsum Association, read 2026-10-31.
Do knockdown texture walls usually contain asbestos?
These sources do not establish how often knockdown walls contain asbestos. The finish name and appearance do not identify its composition. EPA says visual inspection alone generally cannot determine whether a material contains asbestos; the name knockdown is therefore insufficient to answer for a particular wall: “Generally, you can't tell whether a material contains asbestos simply by looking at it, unless it is labeled.” Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, read 2026-10-31.
