What is mudjacking?

Mudjacking raises sunken concrete by pumping a mixture beneath the existing slab to fill empty space and lift it. Cement-based mixtures support the concrete from below.

What causes concrete to settle?

Concrete can settle when the ground supporting it no longer provides enough support. The Federal Highway Administration identifies moisture, an erodible supporting layer and repeated slab movement as factors in pavement support loss. “Pumping and loss of support occurs beneath concrete pavements due to the presence of three factors: an erodible base or subbase, excessive moisture, and significant slab deflections.” Source: Federal Highway Administration, read 2026-10-31.

How does Seattle's sidewalk plan describe mudjacking?

Mudjacking lifts an existing sunken concrete panel by pumping material underneath it. Seattle's sidewalk plan describes a cement-and-soil mixture that fills the empty space and supports the panel; it also notes foam fill. “Mudjacking, or concrete leveling, is used to lift concrete panels when they have sunk or collapsed.” Source: Seattle Department of Transportation, read 2026-10-31. “Usually a cement and soil mixture is pumped under pressure below the existing concrete panel; the practice may also be performed using a foam fill material.” Source: Seattle Department of Transportation, read 2026-10-31.

Can all sunken concrete be lifted?

No. The condition of the slab matters as well as its height. Missouri's pavement maintenance guidance says badly cracked or broken slabs cannot be raised effectively, so lifting alone is not suitable for every damaged panel. “Badly cracked or broken slabs cannot be raised effectively, and bituminous patches or decks should be considered for these sections.” Source: Missouri Department of Transportation, read 2026-10-31.

Will there be holes in my concrete?

Yes. Injection holes give the pumped material a path beneath the slab and are filled afterward. Missouri's cement-grout pavement guidance describes holes generally 2 5/8 inches across and a cement-and-sand mortar patch. Those road specifications do not establish a universal residential hole size. “Holes for mudjacking are generally 2 5/8 in. in diameter and spacing should be done by experienced personnel.” Source: Missouri Department of Transportation, read 2026-10-31. “After all pumping has been completed all drill holes must be cleaned out and filled with a mortar composed of one part of cement to three parts of concrete sand by volume.” Source: Missouri Department of Transportation, read 2026-10-31.

How long does mudjacking last?

There is no fixed service life established by the FHWA passage below. It warns that raising a slab alone may leave the causes of settlement unresolved, including excess moisture and poorly consolidated support. That limits any promise about how long a repair will last. “Because loss of support and slab settlement may be caused by a number of different factors (including excessive moisture, poor load transfer at joints, and poor consolidation), slab stabilization and slab jacking performed by themselves may not be sufficient to eliminate the problems.” Source: Federal Highway Administration, read 2026-10-31.
