What is mulch?

Mulch is material spread over garden soil to retain moisture, discourage weeds and buffer temperature. EPA recommends 3–4 inches for most plants and warns that excess can restrict water reaching roots. Match the depth to the planting and soil before requesting a mulch installation.

What this means for your home project

  1. Pull existing weeds before spreading mulch so the planting area starts clear. Source: EPA, read 2026-11-06.
  2. Measure the length and width of each rectangular bed; multiply them to record its area in square feet. Source: University of Florida IFAS, read 2026-11-06.
  3. Request a written scope that states bed area and mulch depth in inches, the two inputs for calculating material volume. Source: University of Florida IFAS, read 2026-11-06.
  4. Measure the gap at each tree trunk; keep mulch at least 6 inches away. Source: Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, read 2026-11-06.

What is mulch made of?

Mulch materials include hardwood chips, straw, leaves, pine needles and grass clippings. EPA (read 2026-11-06) says organic mulch adds nutrients "as it decomposes"; rock and gravel can suppress weeds but radiate heat. EPA advises against rock mulch in sunny areas or around plants from climates that are not arid. (source)

“Organic mulch such as hardwood chips, straw, leaves, pine needles, or grass clippings will help improve the condition of soil, by adding nutrients as it decomposes.” (source) “Inorganic mulches like rocks, pebbles, or gravel may help to eliminate weeds.” (source) “Avoid using rock mulches in sunny areas or around non-arid climate plants, as they radiate large amounts of heat and promote water loss that can lead to scorching.” (source)

How deep should the mulch layer be around trees and shrubs?

Mulch depth depends on soil drainage. Iowa State Extension (read 2026-11-06) describes a "2- to 3-inch-layer" on heavy soils, compared with 3–4 inches of wood chips or shredded bark on well-drained sites around trees and shrubs. A deeper layer can waterlog heavy soils and interfere with oxygen movement. (source)

“On heavy soils, a 2- to 3-inch-layer would be suitable.” (source)

How much mulch should you buy?

Mulch quantity depends on bed area and desired depth. UF/IFAS (read 2026-11-06) calculates cubic yards by multiplying square feet by depth in inches, then dividing by "324". For a written installation scope, request both the measured bed area and intended depth so the material quantity has an explicit basis. (source)

“Finally, divide that answer by 324 (the amount of mulch needed to cover one cubic yard).” (source)

Do I need new mulch every year?

Organic mulch needs topping up according to its condition. Colorado State Extension (read 2026-11-06) recommends reapplying after materials have "begun to break down" to maintain suitable depth. Assess the existing layer before requesting another application; the guidance ties replenishment to breakdown and depth rather than an automatic annual replacement. (source)

“Reapply organic mulches after they have begun to break down in order to maintain appropriate depth.” (source)

Will mulching with wood chips or sawdust rob nitrogen from plants?

Woody mulch left on the surface does not compete with plants for nitrogen, according to Missouri Extension (read 2026-11-06). The distinction is the "soil surface": mixing these carbon-rich materials into the soil changes the nitrogen concern. Specify surface application around trees and shrubs where the soil remains untilled. (source)

“Carbon-rich woody wastes will not compete with plants for nitrogen if they are placed on the soil surface around plants.” (source)
