What is parquet flooring?
Parquet flooring is a wood floor made from pieces arranged in a geometric pattern rather than straight rows. NWFA’s 2025 guide describes solid and engineered parquet from 5/16 to 3/4 inch thick. Specify the construction, pattern and thickness when asking for an installation scope.

What is the difference between solid and multilayer parquet?
Solid parquet is wood through its full thickness; multilayer, or engineered, parquet combines layers beneath a real-wood surface. Construction and pattern are separate choices: the NWFA installation guide describes parquet as available in either solid or engineered form. “Engineered wood floors are also made of real wood, but include multiple layers, with the top layer made of high-quality wood.” Source: National Wood Flooring Association, read 2026-11-03.
What is the best way to maintain my parquet floor?
For a parquet wood floor, remove dust and dirt by sweeping, dust mopping, or vacuuming on the bare-floor setting. Wipe spills promptly and use a cleaner intended for the particular finish. NWFA advises against wet or steam mops because repeated use damages the finish and wood. “Clean spills immediately with a dry or slightly damp cloth.” Source: National Wood Flooring Association, read 2026-11-03.
Can parquet flooring be refinished?
Parquet can be considered for refinishing, but the remaining wear layer and floor condition affect whether sanding is suitable. NWFA distinguishes a maintenance coat for dull finish from a full sand and refinish for deeper damage or exposed bare wood. Ask which treatment the floor actually needs. “It is also recommended when the finish has worn away, and the bare wood is exposed.” Source: National Wood Flooring Association, read 2026-11-03.
Is it possible to walk on parquet immediately after installation?
For glued parquet tiles, allow at least 24 hours before foot traffic unless the adhesive manufacturer directs otherwise. This is the setting period in NWFA’s parquet-tile guidance, rather than a universal completion time. Adhesive also needs adequate drying and off-gassing before topcoats are applied. “Allow the floor to set for at least 24 hours, or as otherwise directed by the adhesive manufacturer, before allowing foot traffic.” Source: National Wood Flooring Association, read 2026-11-03.
Can you replace parquet elements?
Individual replacement is a possibility to evaluate before replacing an entire historic parquet floor. In its historic-preservation guidance, NPS applies Standard 2, Standard 5 and Standard 6 of the Standards for Rehabilitation: retain repairable material and evaluate deterioration before choosing replacement. Where replacement is justified, compare tile dimensions, pattern, edges, finish and color. “Once it has been determined that replacement of the historic wood flooring is acceptable, an appropriate replacement must be selected.” Source: National Park Service, read 2026-11-03.
Should I choose strip, plank, parquet, or end-grain flooring?
Choose the layout as well as the wood construction. NWFA distinguishes strip flooring below 3 inches wide from plank flooring at least 3 inches wide; parquet creates a geometric arrangement instead. End-grain flooring presents the wood’s grain upward. Herringbone, chevron and finger-block are examples of parquet patterns. “End grain flooring has a unique visual element as the wood’s grain is visible and upward facing.” Source: National Wood Flooring Association, read 2026-11-03. “Some typical patterns are chevron, herringbone, and traditional square-shaped finger-block patterns.” Source: USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, read 2026-11-03.
