What is a paver patio?
A paver patio is an outdoor paved area made from individual paving units. In an interlocking concrete patio, sand and edge restraints hold those units together as a system.

What are pavers made out of?
Concrete pavers contain cement and aggregates, with water added during manufacturing. CMHA describes factory production using pressure and vibration; its materials description here applies specifically to concrete pavers. “Interlocking concrete pavers are composed of portland cement, fine and coarse aggregates.” Source: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, read 2026-10-31.
What is a paver patio according to CMHA’s pavement guide?
In CMHA’s description of an interlocking concrete patio, separate paving units and sand form a surface held together by edge restraints. Those restraints keep the units and sand in place around the patio. “The pavers and sand are held together by them, enabling the system to remain interlocked.” Source: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, read 2026-10-31. “For walks, patios, and driveways, edge restraints can be steel, aluminum, troweled concrete and submerged concrete curb, or plastic edging specifically designed for concrete pavers.” Source: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, read 2026-10-31.
Should I Seal My Pavers?
Consider sealing when stain protection or a change in appearance suits your concrete patio. CMHA describes these surface benefits separately from strength: a sealer does not increase the system’s load capacity. “Sealers reduce the intrusion of water, stains, oils and dirt into the paver surfaces.” Source: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, read 2026-10-31. “Sealers do not increase the structural properties of the paver nor do they impact the loading capacity of the paver system.” Source: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, read 2026-10-31.
What is the white film on my pavers?
A whitish powder on concrete patio pavers can be efflorescence, a mineral deposit described by CMHA. The deposit itself does not reduce paver strength or durability; a white mark still needs identification before treatment. “Efflorescence is a whitish powder-like deposit which can appear on concrete products.” Source: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, read 2026-10-31. “Efflorescence does not affect the structural performance or durability of concrete pavers.” Source: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, read 2026-10-31.
Are pavers slippery when wet?
Grip depends on the particular concrete paver surface and its joints, so a patio should not be treated as slip-proof. CMHA also cautions that too much sealer can leave a slippery cured surface. “The amount of slip resistance depends on the surface texture and joint widths.” Source: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, read 2026-10-31. “Be careful not to over apply the sealers such that the surface becomes slippery when cured.” Source: Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association, read 2026-10-31.
