What is R-value?
R-value measures how well insulation resists heat flow. Higher R-values mean greater insulating power; the installed thickness and fit affect performance.

Does doubling an insulation layer double its R-value?
The layer R-values add when the insulation retains its rated performance. Two layers rated R-15 total R-30 in that calculation; compression can reduce the result. “In calculating the R-value of a multi-layered installation, the R-values of the individual layers are added.” Source: ENERGY STAR, read 2026-10-30.
What is R-value in ENERGY STAR’s definition?
R-value describes resistance to heat moving through insulation. ENERGY STAR explains that a higher rating means better thermal performance; it does not describe insulation thickness by itself. “R-Value is a measure of insulation’s ability to resist heat traveling through it.” Source: ENERGY STAR, read 2026-10-30. “The higher the R-Value the better the thermal performance of the insulation.” Source: ENERGY STAR, read 2026-10-30.
Can insulation be compressed to fit into a smaller frame?
Compression changes the rating you can expect from fiberglass batts. NAIMA states that a batt squeezed below its labeled thickness loses some of its R-value. “When uniformly compressed below the labeled thickness, some reduction in R-value will occur in fiber glass batt insulation.” Source: North American Insulation Manufacturers Association (NAIMA), read 2026-10-30.
What affects R-value of walls?
Material, thickness and density affect insulation R-value, while framing also affects the wall as a whole. Heat can travel through studs around the insulation; the ENERGY STAR fact sheet calls this thermal bridging. “This heat flow is called thermal bridging.” Source: ENERGY STAR, read 2026-10-30.
The specification calls for an insulation level of 3.35m²•k/W. What does this mean?
That number uses metric thermal-resistance units, often labeled RSI. The National Insulation Association gives 3.35 square meters kelvin per watt as approximately R-19 in U.S. customary units. “The conversion equation for this RSI value to R-Value (I-P) = 5.6783 x 3.35 or R–19 (I-P).” Source: National Insulation Association, read 2026-10-30.
