What is a rain chain?

A rain chain is a hanging alternative to a gutter downspout that guides roof water down to the ground. Cupped chains reduce splashback compared with plain links. The water still needs to flow away from the foundation, so choose the chain and its drainage destination together.

What this means for your home project

  1. From the ground during rain, watch the roofline for places where water concentrates before choosing a gutterless chain location. Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02.
  2. Ask for a written attachment scope that follows the selected chain manufacturer’s directions; the reply should identify that attachment method. Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02.
  3. Ask the drainage plan to show where water leaving the chain will flow away from the foundation. Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02.
  4. Look for roof stress; if present, have the chain removed or the support reinforced to avoid roof damage. Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02.

What is the difference between the cup and link style?

Cupped chains reduce splashback; plain or loop chains splash more because they offer less surface area to slow water. Clemson Extension’s South Carolina guidance makes that distinction useful when soil loss is a concern. A traditional downspout is the alternative named in its definition. “If soil loss is a concern, consider cupped chains, which will reduce the amount of splashback.” Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02. “Plain chains or loop chains will splash more as less surface area exists to slow the water down.” Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02.

Do I need rain gutters to use my rain chain?

No. Alabama Extension describes using a rain chain where water concentrates at the corners of the eaves, the projecting roof edges. Its homeowner guide says a chain can direct that water into a rain barrel even without a gutter. “Without a gutter, you can collect rainwater in the corners of your eaves where rain concentrates or utilize a rain chain to direct water into your rain barrel.” Source: Alabama Cooperative Extension System, read 2026-11-02.

Where does the water flow into from a rain chain?

A basin or rain barrel can receive the water, according to the City of Ramsey, Minnesota. The receiving container is only part of the decision: Clemson Extension stresses that the discharged water must flow away from the home’s foundation. “Rain chains are designed to replace a downspout and channel water to a specific location, such as a basin or rain barrel.” Source: City of Ramsey, Minnesota, read 2026-11-02. “It is critical to make sure the water flowing from the chain is flowing away from the foundation of your home; rain chains offer little benefit otherwise.” Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02.

Do I need to anchor the bottom of my rain chain?

For a chain hanging to the ground, Clemson Extension recommends an anchoring dish or planter pot to limit swinging and catch water. Its South Carolina installation example places the dish over ¾-inch drainage rock; anchoring and drainage belong in the same work scope. “If you choose to let the chain hang to the ground, you will want to use an anchoring dish (or planter pot) to prevent the chain from swinging in the wind and also to catch the water that comes down the chain.” Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02. “Fill the hole with ¾ inch drainage rock and place the anchoring dish on top.” Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02.

Are rain chains too heavy for my gutters?

The chain and water add load, so look for roof stress rather than assuming every gutter can support them. Clemson Extension puts water’s weight at a little over 8 pounds per gallon and advises removal or reinforcement if roof stress appears. “Remember, water weighs a little over 8 lbs. per gallon.” Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02. “Look for signs of stress to the roof structure, if noted, remove the rain chain or provide reinforcement to avoid roof damage.” Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02. “Check the gutters for wear and tear at least twice a year (this can be done when cleaning the gutters, which should also be done twice a year).” Source: Clemson Cooperative Extension, read 2026-11-02.
