What is a shear wall?
A shear wall is a structural wall that resists sideways forces from wind or earthquakes. In a wood-framed home, sheathing panels and their connections work together; loads pass down toward the foundation. Panel orientation alone does not determine strength. When planning an opening, request a design that addresses how forces travel around it.

Should I install panels vertically or horizontally?
Either orientation can work for plywood or oriented strand board (OSB) shear-wall panels. APA says orientation does not change lateral capacity; panel edges still need framing or blocking unless the wall is designed as unblocked. Blocking is framing supporting panel edges. Ask the installer to identify that edge support on the plan. “Panels may be installed with the long, or strength, axis either horizontal or vertical.” Source: APA – The Engineered Wood Association, read 2026-11-02.
Why does the shear wall table stop with 15/32 nominal thickness for Structural I panels and stop with 19/32 nominal thickness under regular sheathing?
Those are minimum panel thicknesses in the table APA discusses, measured in inches. Simply specifying thicker sheathing does not increase its listed shear capacity: APA says fasteners control above 15/32 inches for Structural I panels and 19/32 inches for regular sheathing. Request the panel specification and fastening details together. “The heading for the panel thickness column states “minimum”.” Source: APA – The Engineered Wood Association, read 2026-11-02.
How large do openings in shear walls and diaphragms need to be to require analysis and reinforcement?
Do not treat a small hole as automatically exempt from design review. WoodWorks warns that shear-wall testing does not establish small-hole recommendations. It distinguishes holes for mechanical, electrical or plumbing services from doors and windows, which typically use a designed method for transferring forces around openings. Ask the structural designer to address the proposed opening. “Shear walls have not been tested with specific goals of providing recommendations regarding small holes.” Source: WoodWorks – Wood Products Council, read 2026-11-02.
Should the 3” x 3” washers specified for shear wall anchorage be corrosion resistant?
Contact with preservative-treated wood changes the question. The American Wood Council says corrosion-resistant hardware may be needed there; for interior washers on untreated wood, it is generally unnecessary. Ask the treated-wood supplier for its hardware recommendation and have the written scope identify the proposed washer protection. “If the hardware is in contact with preservative treated wood, corrosion resistant hardware may be required.” Source: American Wood Council, read 2026-11-02.
Are hold downs not required for a shearwall?
Their omission needs a design-specific explanation of how the wall resists overturning, the tendency for a wall end to lift under sideways forces. PNNL explains why anchorage matters; APA describes end hold-downs as a typical solution. Ask the designer which anchorage the wall uses before assuming hold-downs are unnecessary. “Proper anchorage or connection prevents the shear walls and, in turn, the rest of the structure from laterally racking, displacing, or overturning during a high-wind or seismic event.” Source: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Building America Solution Center, read 2026-11-02.
