What is siding?

Siding is the outside wall covering that sheds rain and protects the wall beneath it. Water can still get behind the finish. DOE describes engineered rainscreen products with at least a 3/16-inch drainage gap; include the drainage specification alongside the visible material in your siding scope.

  2. Find the proposed product’s evaluation report and identify its fastener pattern, clearances and cut-edge treatment before comparing installation proposals. Source: U.S. Department of Energy, Building America Solution Center, read 2026-11-06.
  3. Ask for a written transition detail showing how the proposed siding meets windows, doors and the foundation; keep that detail with the bid. Source: U.S. Department of Energy, Building America Solution Center, read 2026-11-06.

Is siding waterproof?

Siding sheds rain but is not a watertight wall. DOE says siding should not be treated as a "waterproof layer" (read 2026-11-06). A gap behind the siding lets water drain away from the water-control layer over the wall framing and sheathing. (source)

“Regardless of the material, siding should not be thought of as a waterproof layer.” (source) “Thus, it is paramount for a wall to have adequate backside drainage and drying to allow water and moisture that gets behind the siding to come back out.” (source) “Drainage is provided by a gap or air space between the siding and a water control layer typically located on the exterior of the wall framing and sheathing.” (source)

Does siding need to be painted?

Wood siding can be painted or stained; the surface affects the choice. USDA’s December 1983 bulletin says "Edge-grained bevel siding will hold paint well" (read 2026-11-06), while recommending penetrating stains for rough-sawn lumber. That wood-specific distinction does not specify a finish for every siding material. (source)

“Edge-grained bevel siding will hold paint well.” (source) “Penetrating stains or preservative treatments are preferred for rough-sawn lumber.” (source)

What siding material is best?

Siding selection should match local hazards, including hail, wildfire, pests and moisture, according to DOE (read 2026-11-06). Drainage also needs a specification: DOE describes ASTM E2925-19 engineered rainscreen products as providing "at least a 3/16 inch gap". That figure concerns those drainage products, not every siding assembly. (source)

“Select siding materials that can resist likely hazards for the home’s locale such as impacts from hail and wind-borne debris, wildfire, pests, and moisture.” (source) “ASTM E2925-19 specifies that engineered rainscreen mesh, textured, and batten products provide at least a 3/16 inch gap.” (source)

Does siding need to be replaced?

Damaged siding needs an evaluation before choosing repair or replacement. DOE calls for determining whether "the damage can be repaired" (read 2026-11-06). Rotted boards around fasteners are more vulnerable to wind removal; buckled or cracked boards are more likely to catch wildfire embers. (source)

“Siding materials and installations that have been damaged by either a storm, natural disaster, or years of weathering should be evaluated to see whether the damage can be repaired or whether a complete replacement of the siding is necessary.” (source) “Siding boards that have rotted around the fasteners are more likely to be pulled off by high winds.” (source) “Boards that have buckled or cracked are more likely to catch embers in a wildfire.” (source)

Does siding help with insulation?

Siding replacement creates an opportunity to add insulation rather than treating the exterior finish as the whole insulation job. DOE names "blown cellulose or fiberglass" for wall cavities and rigid foam outside walls (read 2026-11-06). Insulation type and amount need local guidance to avoid moisture condensation. (source)

“A siding replacement is also an excellent time to add wall insulation to the wall cavities using blown cellulose or fiberglass and/or to the exterior of the walls using rigid foam that can serve as a continuous thermal break and air barrier as well as a drainage plane depending on the product and if the seams are taped.” (source) “Consult with a rater, see your local building code, other guides in the Solution Center, and the Building America Building Science Advisor for guidance on how much and what type of insulation to add to avoid moisture condensation in the walls in your locale.” (source)

Why is siding so expensive?

Siding replacement can involve work beyond the visible boards. DOE describes inspecting and correcting "air sealing, insulation, flashing, and drainage plane layers" on older homes (read 2026-11-06). Request a written scope identifying which of these tasks is included; compare the work described rather than assuming every replacement covers it. (source)

“Replacement of siding on an older home offers the opportunity to ensure that air sealing, insulation, flashing, and drainage plane layers are inspected and corrected for proper installation as well.” (source)

How is siding installed?

Siding installation needs product-specific instructions and planned transitions. DOE recommends detailing corners and transitions to "a window, door, foundation, and soffit" (read 2026-11-06). Its guide points to the product’s International Code Council evaluation report for fasteners, clearances, flashing and treatment of cut edges and joints. (source)

“Ensure there is a plan for how to detail the siding outside corner, inside corner, and transitions to a window, door, foundation, and soffit.” (source) “For best results, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific brand and model of product you are using.” (source) “Note that many siding products have an International Code Council (ICC) evaluation service report (ICC-ES or ESR) (found online by searching for “ESR” and the product name).” (source) “For example, see the ESR for information on fasteners and fastener patterns, flashing details, clearances to the ground and other edges, and treatment of cut edges and joints.” (source)
