What is a soffit vent?

A soffit vent is an opening under a roof overhang that lets outside air enter a vented attic. A clear path above the insulation connects this intake to outlets higher on the roof.

How do soffit vents work?

Outside air enters a vented attic through soffit openings and follows a clear channel past the insulation toward higher roof outlets. ENERGY STAR describes that path from the soffits to a gable or ridge vent. “Rafter vents ensure the soffit vents are clear and there is a channel for outside air to move into the attic at the soffits and out through the gable or ridge vent.” Source: ENERGY STAR (U.S. EPA / DOE), read 2026-10-31.

Where are soffit vents on a vented attic?

Soffit vents are openings in the underside of the roof overhang that admit air to a vented attic. PNNL describes nearly continuous openings or vents spaced every couple of feet along the eaves. “Look under the roof eaves, on the long sides of your roof, not the pointed gable ends.” Source: DOE Building America Solution Center (PNNL), read 2026-10-31. “They may be nearly continuous or spaced every couple of feet.” Source: DOE Building America Solution Center (PNNL), read 2026-10-31.

Do soffit vents need baffles?

In a vented attic insulated at floor level, baffles keep the soffit intake connected to an open channel above the insulation. PNNL explains that they also keep incoming air from blowing through the insulation. “Baffles keep insulation from blocking the soffit vents and keep air from blowing through the attic insulation (Figure 1).” Source: DOE Building America Solution Center (PNNL), read 2026-10-31.

Do I need soffit vents if I have a ridge vent?

A ridge vent is an exhaust opening, so a vented attic also needs a source of replacement air. Soffit vents commonly provide that intake. ARMA describes the balanced system below; PNNL also documents low-profile roof intakes that can replace soffit vents where the roof design uses them. “Proper attic ventilation is a balanced system of intake and exhaust that allows a continuous flow of air.” Source: Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, read 2026-10-31.

What happens if soffit vents are blocked?

A blocked soffit vent interrupts the intended intake path. ENERGY STAR identifies a particular consequence when an attic fan operates above a house with air leaks: the fan can pull conditioned indoor air into the attic instead. The warning depends on both blockage and inadequate air sealing. “However, if your attic has blocked soffit vents and is not well-sealed from the rest of the house, attic fans will suck cool conditioned air up out of the house and into the attic.” Source: ENERGY STAR (U.S. EPA / DOE), read 2026-10-31.
