What are solid surface countertops?

Solid surface countertops are manufactured sheets made from resins, mineral fillers and pigments, with a nonporous, uniform material through the sheet. ISFA 2-01 (2013) describes typical horizontal sheets as 12.0 mm (1/2 inch) thick. Joints can be inconspicuous; specify the sheet type and supporting base before arranging installation.

How thick are solid surface countertops?

ISFA 2-01 describes typical horizontal sheets as 12.0 mm (1/2 inch) nominal thickness, supported by wood or steel members. It separately describes thin Veneer Type sheets laminated onto a full supporting base; sheet thickness and the finished edge are different scope details. “They are typically fabricated using 12.0 mm (1/2 in.) nominal thickness sheets supported by wood or steel members, or Veneer Type applied to a full substrate.” Source: International Surface Fabricators Association, read 2026-11-04. “Due to their thickness, they generally must be laminated onto a substrate to perform in typical horizontal applications.” Source: International Surface Fabricators Association, read 2026-11-04.

Can solid surface countertops be repaired if they scratch or chip?

For Corian, repair can address damage without replacing the whole countertop, but the method depends on the damage. Its technical bulletin describes a color-matched plug for a small damaged section that a minor repair cannot restore. Have the fabricator explain the proposed method before work starts. “Plug repairs are a simple and effective way to replace a small section in a countertop which may have been damaged and cannot be refurbished using a minor repair technique.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04. “The plug repair removes a small circular section which is replaced with a color-matched piece of Corian® Solid Surface using similar techniques to an inlay.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04. “Always discuss your repair technique with the customer prior to starting the process.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04.

Will I be able to see the joins in the solid surface after it is joined?

Solid surface joints can be difficult to detect rather than automatically invisible. ISFA describes inconspicuous seams, built-up edges, and combinations of sheets with shaped pieces. Ask the fabricator to identify the proposed joints and edge construction in your written scope. “The ability to seam solid surface products in an inconspicuous manner allows for: built-up edges in a variety of thicknesses; smooth, cleanable and difficult to detect seams; and the ability to join sheets and shaped goods in a myriad of combinations.” Source: International Surface Fabricators Association, read 2026-11-04.

How do I remove stains from my countertop?

For a Corian countertop, start stain removal with nonabrasive cleansers. Tough stains may need repair techniques, and restoring a semi-gloss or gloss finish uniformly can require professional tools. For routine dirt and residue, follow the maker’s cleaner guidance; avoid window cleaner and dry the countertop after cleaning. “The general approach is to start with nonabrasive cleansers to remove stains.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04. “Tough to remove stains, fine scratches, and small cuts can be removed using standard repair techniques.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04. “They will remove stains and scratches from all finishes, however it is difficult to uniformly restore semi-gloss and gloss finishes without professional tools and techniques.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04. “Warm soapy water, ammonia-based cleaners or commercially available solid surface cleaners will remove most dirt and residue from all types of finishes.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04. “Avoid window cleaners, however, as they can leave a waxy build-up that dulls the surface.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04. “To prevent buildup of the film, it is very important to wipe the countertop completely dry after spills and cleaning.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04.

Can you put hot pans on solid surface?

Use a trivet or hot pad on Corian instead of setting hot cookware directly on the countertop. Its care bulletin calls for limiting direct heat and also putting a trivet under portable heat-generating appliances such as a toaster oven. Heat resistance does not remove those precautions. “While Corian® Solid Surface is heat resistant, as with all countertop materials, it is important to minimize direct heat exposure to protect your surface and investment.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04. “Always use heat trivets or hot pads when placing hot objects on any surface.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04. “Always use a trivet under portable heat generating appliances such as a toaster oven.” Source: Corian Design, read 2026-11-04.

Is there any difference between the solid surface branded materials?

Check the material type and intended application rather than relying on the product name alone. Standard 2-01 (2013), published by ISFA, distinguishes Standard Type sheets from Special Purpose Type sheets whose altered composition can affect performance. Request the manufacturer’s application criteria for the exact sheet proposed. “Standard Type solid surface sheets are designed for horizontal, vertical, wet, and dry applications.” Source: International Surface Fabricators Association, read 2026-11-04. “Special Purpose Type solid surface sheets are similar to Standard Type, however, the composition of the sheets may be altered to meet specific aesthetic requirements.” Source: International Surface Fabricators Association, read 2026-11-04. “This change in composition may affect the performance properties of the sheets.” Source: International Surface Fabricators Association, read 2026-11-04. “Consult ISFA, the manufacturer and your fabricator for application, fabrication and installation criteria.” Source: International Surface Fabricators Association, read 2026-11-04.

What Affects Solid Surface Countertop Costs?

The material type changes the supporting-base scope to compare in bids. ISFA distinguishes Standard Type sheets that do not require a full substrate from thin Veneer Type sheets that generally do. Here, substrate means the supporting base beneath the sheet. Request that base as a separate written scope item; these are material and work factors, not a price estimate. “The different types were engineered to meet specific needs based on aesthetics, performance, economy, and use.” Source: International Surface Fabricators Association, read 2026-11-04. “Standard Type solid surface sheets do not require a full substrate to perform in horizontal applications.” Source: International Surface Fabricators Association, read 2026-11-04.
