What is a storm door?

A storm door is a second movable door used with an exterior entry door to protect it from weather or help control the indoor climate. Federal rule 16 CFR 1201.2 also calls it a combination door. Before selecting one, establish whether the opening and mounting surface can accommodate it.

Do you need a storm door?

An older entry door still in good condition may suit a storm door, according to Vermont Energy Saver. Its guidance says a newer insulated entry door generally gains little additional energy benefit. For historic homes, the National Park Service identifies cold climates and doors with glass as the most effective setting. “Adding a storm door may also be a good investment if your existing door is old, but still in good condition.” Source: Vermont Energy Saver, read 2026-11-03. “In general, storm doors are most effective in cold climates on historic doors with glazing.” Source: National Park Service, read 2026-11-03.

What makes a quality storm door?

Specify the glass type when comparing a storm door, rather than treating all glazing as interchangeable. Federal rule 16 CFR Part 1201, section 1201.2(a)(33), defines tempered glass by its treatment and fabrication limits. A tempered pane cannot be cut or drilled after treatment without fracture; its highly tempered breakage pattern is described separately below. “(33) Tempered glass means a piece of specially heat treated or chemically treated glass that cannot be cut, drilled, ground, or polished after treatment without fracture.” Source: Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, reproduced by Cornell Legal Information Institute, read 2026-11-03. “When fractured at any point, if highly tempered, the entire piece breaks into small particles.” Source: Electronic Code of Federal Regulations, reproduced by Cornell Legal Information Institute, read 2026-11-03.

How do you measure for a storm door?

For the Andersen method, measure the opening from outside at the inside faces of the exterior trim. Take widths near the top, center and bottom, then use the smallest. Measure height from the door sill to the trim above; this records an opening rather than simply copying an old door size. “Record the smallest measurement and use that as your width.” Source: Andersen Windows, read 2026-11-03.

How do you install a storm door?

For the Andersen 1-1/4-inch self-storing model, installation begins with confirming sufficient opening width, height and mounting surface. Guide P/N 621791, Figure 3, lists 1-inch mounting depth, 3/4-inch front surface and 2-1/2-inch handle clearance. Request these fit checks in the written scope for that model; an inadequately fastened mounting surface can let the door sag. “The storm door will sag over time if the mounting surface is not sufficiently fastened to the entryway.” Source: Andersen Storm Door Division, read 2026-11-03.

How long does it take to install a storm door?

Installation time depends on the preparation supplied with the particular door. Andersen estimates two hours for its Rapid install 2 category, supplied unassembled but already cut to length. Its Pro install category instead arrives unassembled and must be cut to length. Ask which preparation your proposed model requires; the estimate is not a promise for your opening. “Rapid install 2 was also designed for DIYers, and it’s estimated to take two hours to install.” Source: Andersen Windows, read 2026-11-03. “It comes unassembled and must be cut to length.” Source: Andersen Windows, read 2026-11-03.
