What is travertine?
Travertine is a type of limestone with natural holes, used as building and decorative stone. It is sold filled or unfilled. The Natural Stone Institute’s 2022 specification calls for filling holes larger than 2 cm, or holes passing through unfilled stone, with a stone chip cemented below the surface.

What this means for your home project
- Request a range of travertine samples before installation so your selection uses more than one example. Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03.
- For a multiple-pallet order, ask the installer to mix pieces from all pallets when planning the layout. Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03.
- Request a written layout showing jointing details and each travertine unit’s dimensions; use the drawing to compare the proposed scope. Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03.
- If the surface is etched, contact a stone restorer about refinishing or repolishing the affected area. Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03.

What is the difference between vein-cut and cross-cut travertine?
Vein-cut travertine shows a linear pattern across the stone’s layers. Cross-cut, also called fleuri cut, exposes a random, flowery pattern parallel to those layers. Specify which appearance you want when comparing samples. “Vein-cut travertine is cut against the bedding planes, exposing the edge of the formation and giving a very linear pattern.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “Sometimes called “cross cut,” the fleuri cut is parallel to the bedding plane, exposing a “flowery,” random pattern.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03.
What is filled & unfilled travertine?
Filled travertine has material added to its natural voids; unfilled travertine leaves those spaces open. The Natural Stone Institute lists portland cement and epoxy or polyester resin as filling materials. Ask which fill is proposed. “Travertine may be obtained with its normal voids unfilled or filled.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “Common materials used for filling are natural (gray colored) or tinted portland cement, and clear or colored epoxy or polyester resins.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03.
What finishes do Travertine Tiles and Pavers come in?
Honed travertine has a smooth, satin surface with little or no gloss. Polished travertine is glossy and brings out its color. These describe the surface finish; the filled-versus-unfilled choice describes the voids discussed above. “4.1.2 Honed: A satin smooth surface with little or no gloss.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “4.1.1 Polished: A glossy surface which brings out the full color and character of the travertine.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03.
What are the differences between the Grades or Qualities in Travertine?
Compare the actual structure, finish and sample range rather than relying on a grade label. The Natural Stone Institute’s 2022 specification lists ASTM C1527 for travertine dimension stone. Its unfilled-stone guidance addresses holes larger than 2 cm and holes passing through the stone. When comparing marble labels, note that the building trade also classifies travertine as marble; the name alone does not distinguish the two. “Holes are not the issue, solid structure and finish work determines the quality.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “Customer should always request a range of samples before installation.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “Holes larger than 2 cm in diameter and/or holes that go through the stone should be filled with a travertine chip cemented below the surface of the stone.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “Travertine and other compact varieties of limestone are classified as marble (see metamorphic rocks) by the building stone industry.” Source: Utah Geological Survey, read 2026-11-03.
What cleaner should I use for travertine, and what should I avoid?
Use a neutral stone cleaner, stone soap or mild dishwashing detergent with warm water. Avoid lemon, vinegar and other acidic cleaners: the Natural Stone Institute warns that they can dull or etch calcium-based stone such as travertine. “Clean stone surfaces with a neutral cleaner, stone soap, or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “Products containing lemon, vinegar or other acids may dull or etch calcareous stones.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03.
What is the difference between a stain and etching on travertine?
An oil-based stain darkens stone; etching affects the finish and can occur without a stain. Some materials cause both. For an etched travertine surface, ask a stone restorer about refinishing or repolishing rather than treating it only as a cleaning problem. “An oil-based stain will darken the stone and normally must be chemically dissolved so the source of the stain can be flushed or rinsed away.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “Some materials will etch the finish but not leave a stain.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “Others will both etch and stain.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03. “Contact your stone dealer or call a professional stone restorer for refinishing or repolishing etched areas.” Source: Natural Stone Institute, read 2026-11-03.
