What is a vent stack?

A vent stack is a vertical plumbing pipe that moves air into and out of a home’s drainage system. ICC’s 2021 plumbing guidance defines that role. For your project, the important connection is trap protection: vent piping balances air pressure so draining water does not disrupt the water seals in fixture traps.

What this means for your home project

  1. Ask the plumber to explain how the proposed work preserves the vent air path and the water seals in fixture traps. The 2024 IPC describes a pressure limit of 1 inch of water column; ask which local code applies. Source: International Code Council, read 2026-10-31.
  2. If a vent is being rerouted, ask how moisture will drain back to the drainage piping. The 2024 IPC states that vent and branch vent piping must drain back by gravity. Source: International Code Council, read 2026-10-31.
  3. Before a scheduled sewer smoke test, ask the utility about seldom-used sinks, tubs, showers and floor drains: their trap water can evaporate between uses. Source: Northampton Municipal Authority, read 2026-10-31.

What does a vent stack look like?

Look for a vertical plumbing pipe emerging from the roof. Northampton’s 2024 sewer-testing notice describes that visible outlet; a roof view alone does not establish the arrangement of the piping hidden inside the home: “The vertical pipe coming out of the roof is called the vent stack and provides an outlet for gases and odors for the buildings wastewater plumbing system.” Source: Northampton Municipal Authority, read 2026-10-31.

How does ICC define a vent stack?

ICC defines a vent stack as a vertical air pipe serving the drainage system. Its 2021 IPC guidance uses the following definition, which identifies the pipe by its air-circulation role rather than by the fixtures it drains: “A vertical vent pipe installed primarily for the purpose of providing circulation of air to and from any part of the drainage system.” Source: International Code Council, read 2026-10-31.

Why would the vent stack connect to the sewer if it's for allowing air into the system / letting gasses escape?

The connection gives air a route into and out of the drainage system as wastewater moves. Section 901.2 of the 2024 International Plumbing Code ties that airflow to protecting the water seal in fixture traps: “The plumbing system shall be provided with a system of vent piping that will permit the admission or emission of air so that the seal of any fixture trap shall not be subjected to a pressure differential of more than 1 inch of water column (249 Pa).” Source: International Code Council, read 2026-10-31.

Why aren't vent stacks usually equipped with hats?

An open plumbing vent provides an air path, and moisture inside the vent has a route back to the drain. The 2024 IPC states the drainage and termination provisions below; it does not make a decorative rain hat a universal requirement. These are model-code provisions, so ask which locally adopted rules apply: “Vent and branch vent pipes shall be so graded and connected as to drain back to the drainage pipe by gravity.” Source: International Code Council, read 2026-10-31. “Vent stacks or stack vents shall terminate outdoors to the open air or to a stack-type air admittance valve in accordance with Section 918 .” Source: International Code Council, read 2026-10-31.

Is it normal for smoke to come out of the roof vent stack on my house or building?

Yes, during the planned sewer smoke test described in Northampton’s 2024 notice: roof plumbing vents are an expected exit. This answer concerns test smoke introduced by the utility, and does not identify the cause of smoke at any other time: “Any location where the smoke exits the sewer system, except for plumbing roof vent stacks, is a potential source for storm or ground water to enter the sewer system.” Source: Northampton Municipal Authority, read 2026-10-31.
