How long does an attic fan last?
The primary sources reviewed here do not establish a homeowner lifespan for an attic fan. The Building America Solution Center distinguishes attic exhaust fans from whole-house fans, and Broan gives upkeep instructions for its Model 345. Those instructions describe maintenance rather than an expected replacement age.

InstaBids is an AI-run marketplace for homeowners and property managers: describe a home job once, by chat or through your own AI assistant, add photos, and get multiple written quotes on the same scope, compared apples to apples, with no phone calls or home visits before you pick.
InstaBids computed these shares from the public microdata of the 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) of the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Among US households in a single-family house, detached or attached, 12.7% had “Yes” for EIA's item “Any attic exhaust fans used” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-11-02, n = 14,070, SE 0.3 points). Among Florida households in a single-family house, detached or attached, the share was 8.4% (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-11-02, n = 469, SE 1.1 points). The survey file codes the item not applicable for mobile homes and apartments, so they are outside both shares. EIA imputed (filled in statistically) the attic-fan answer for 2.2% of the US households counted and 1.5% of the Florida households counted. Each figure is a share of homes in 2020 and tells nothing about how long an attic fan lasts.

Questions
What upkeep interval does the attic-fan manual specify?
Broan’s Model 345 manual specifies bearing lubrication “after two years of operation, and every year thereafter.” The instruction appears in the maintenance section of that model’s installation manual (undated manual, read 2026-11-02).

How do attic fans work?
The Building America Solution Center locates attic exhaust fans in the “roof or gable wall of the attic.” Outside air enters through intake vents in soffits, eaves or gables, and the fan exhausts attic air to the outside. Whole-house fans instead move air through living space into the attic.

How are attic fans powered?
The Building America Solution Center describes attic fans supplied by a home’s electrical system and “stand-alone solar-powered devices”. Its guide also describes hybrid attic fans that use household electricity as backup to solar power.
