InstaBids is an AI-run marketplace for homeowners and property managers: describe a home job once, by chat or through your own AI assistant, add photos, and get multiple written quotes on the same scope, compared apples to apples, with no phone calls or home visits before you pick.
Our own shares come from the public microdata of the 2020 Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) of the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Among US households with a swimming pool used in the past year, 35.5% heated the pool with a fuel EIA lists as “Electricity”, “Natural gas from underground pipes”, “Propane (bottled gas)”, “Fuel oil” or “Other” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 1,219, SE 1.5 points), and 10.4% heated it with “Electricity” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 1,219, SE 1.0 points). Among Florida households with a swimming pool used in the past year, 48.4% heated the pool with one of those fuels (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 133, SE 3.9 points) and 27.0% heated it with “Electricity” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 133, SE 3.5 points). EIA imputed (filled in statistically) the pool heating fuel for 3.0% of the US households counted and 2.3% of the Florida households counted. Each figure is a share of homes with a pool in 2020, never a heater's age or how long a pool heater lasts.

How long it lasts, by source
- Electric pool heaters and gas-fired pool heaters together: DOE estimated an average lifetime of 11.1 years in its 2023 rule (2023 rule, data 1987-2022, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source).
- In its 2023 rule, DOE estimated the figure again after adding newer survey and shipment data, and wrote: “This resulted in the same average lifetime value of 11 years.” (2023 rule, data 1987-2022, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). The two figures come from one analysis and are shown as printed.
- Spread: in its 2023 rule, DOE used a survival function “which provides a distribution of lifetime ranging from 1 to 30 years with a mean value of 11 years.” (2023 rule, data 1987-2020, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). That range describes DOE's model, not the heater at any one pool.
- Gas-fired pool heaters: BWC, a heater maker commenting on the average lifetime DOE used in its 2023 rule, “generally agreed with DOE's lifetime average of 11 years for gas-fired pool heaters that are identified as representative models” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source).

How do you make a pool heater last longer?
For the lifetimes it estimated in its 2023 rule, DOE wrote: “DOE assumes that the distribution of lifetimes accounts for the impact of the pool water quality on the life of the product, the level of maintenance of a consumer pool heater, and the fraction of consumers winterizing the consumer pool heater.” (2023 rule, data 1987-2020, read 2026-10-29, national).
In comments DOE recorded in its 2023 rule, where it estimated one average lifetime, Rheem Manufacturing Company “noted that consumers who don't perform routine maintenance, especially winterization, will see lower lifetimes.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national).
For heat pump models, in comments DOE recorded in its 2023 rule, where it estimated one average lifetime, AHRI and PHTA stated that “improper winterization of a heat pump could shorten the life of a heat pump.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national).

Questions
How long does a gas pool heater last?
DOE estimated its 11.1-year average in its 2023 rule for gas-fired pool heaters together with electric ones (2023 rule, data 1987-2022, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). DOE's definition reads: “Gas-fired pool heater means a pool heater that uses gas as its primary energy source.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national). Bradford White Corporation (BWC), a heater maker commenting on the rule, “generally agreed with DOE's lifetime average of 11 years for gas-fired pool heaters that are identified as representative models” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). Manufacturers also told DOE that when a gas-fired heater runs close to the condensing threshold, “the result may be corrosive damage to the heat exchanger, according to these manufacturers.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national).

How long does a pool heat pump last?
DOE did not estimate a separate heat pump lifetime in its 2023 rule: DOE “maintains a single product class for electric pool heaters in this final rule” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national), and the 11.1-year average it estimated covers that class and gas-fired heaters together (2023 rule, data 1987-2022, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). In comments to DOE, two trade groups, the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) and the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA), stated that “improper winterization of a heat pump could shorten the life of a heat pump.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national). About heat pump pool heaters, DOE also noted that “they are nonetheless capable of operating effectively in cooler climates during the swimming season.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national).

How long does an electric pool heater last?
In DOE's rule, “Electric pool heater means a pool heater other than an electric spa heater that uses electricity as its primary energy source.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national). Electric heaters share the 11.1-year average DOE estimated in its 2023 rule with gas-fired heaters (2023 rule, data 1987-2022, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source). For new heaters, DOE adopted minimum standards for electric heaters “at efficiency levels above those capable of being achieved by electric resistance pool heaters.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national), and wrote: “Compliance with the new and amended standards established for consumer pool heaters in this final rule is required on and after May 30, 2028.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national).

How long do pool heaters last in Florida?
No source captured for this page gives a Florida lifetime: DOE estimated one national average in its 2023 rule, and two trade groups, AHRI and PHTA, “suggested that DOE should also consider regional impacts to lifetime estimates, since not including these regional impacts could mean that the lifetime is potentially over inflated compared to the real lifetime for these units.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national). How common heating is there: among Florida households with a swimming pool used in the past year, 48.4% heated the pool with a fuel EIA lists as “Electricity”, “Natural gas from underground pipes”, “Propane (bottled gas)”, “Fuel oil” or “Other” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 133, SE 3.9 points), and 27.0% heated it with “Electricity” (EIA RECS 2020, read 2026-10-29, n = 133, SE 3.5 points).

Should you repair or replace a pool heater?
In comments DOE recorded in its 2023 rule, AHRI and PHTA stated that “pool heating equipment is more likely to be repaired then replaced.” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national). When DOE modelled repairs for higher-efficiency heat pump and gas-fired heaters, it named these parts: “electronic ignition, controls, and blowers for fan-assisted designs, compressor, evaporator fan” (2023 rule, data years not published, read 2026-10-29, national). To compare against a heater's age, the lifetime distribution DOE used ran “from 1 to 30 years with a mean value of 11 years.” (2023 rule, data 1987-2020, read 2026-10-29, national, n not published by the source).
