How to search a permit by address in Brooklyn Park
The city’s “Look up a permit” link opens Tyler eSuite with a Public Information Search section. That section accepts a permit type, a permit number, or a service address. To use the address route, start typing and select the complete address from the dropdown rather than treating the partial entry as the finished selection.
Begin your permit search by selecting a permit type from the dropdown screen, entering a permit number, or begin typing an address and selecting the complete address from the dropdown screen.

The same portal also has a Contractor Access sign-in area. The city describes the property-history search as public; the search instructions sit separately from the contractor account fields. For a new residential application, the city provides an Electronic Permit Application link.

Do I need a permit to repair or replace a roof in Brooklyn Park?
Brooklyn Park requires a building permit for reroofing residential dwellings and garages. Its roofing section also carries a seasonal inspection condition: re-roof inspections stop during winter once the initial snowfall covers the roofs. That condition belongs with the reroofing rule when planning the permit and inspection sequence.
A building permit is required for the reroofing of residential dwellings and garages. To learn more, view our Residential Reroofing handout. Note: Re-roof inspections are not done during the winter months once the initial snowfall covers the roofs.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Brooklyn Park?
The city’s deck page calls for a residential construction permit and a detailed plan for review. Its exemption page describes a narrower situation: decks, platforms and stoops no more than 30 inches above adjacent grade, unattached to a structure with frost footings, and not serving the dwelling’s required exit door. The exemption page also says zoning or Public Works requirements may still apply.
Residential deck construction requires a permit. This type of residential project requires you to submit a detailed plan which allows us to perform a plan review.

For the detailed plan, the city says professional drawing is not necessary, but the drawing must be to scale, neat and legible, with enough information for the reviewer to build the project from it. The site plan or survey must show lot dimensions, property lines and distances for existing and proposed structures.

Can a homeowner pull their own permit in Brooklyn Park?
Brooklyn Park’s FAQ allows a homeowner living in the home to apply for most building, electrical, plumbing and HVAC permits to perform work there. The gas-work condition is separate: the homeowner needs the mechanical credential described by the city before doing gas work. The FAQ also identifies the owner, the owner’s authorized agent or the person causing the work as responsible for obtaining the permit.
The permit-process page ties the owner route to a homesteaded home that is not rented out. Use that condition when deciding whether the owner route fits the property; the city does not describe this as a general permission for work on a rental dwelling.
The city’s residential page separately sets a contractor-credential condition for owners building or remodeling for the sole purpose of speculation or resale.

What work does not need a permit in Brooklyn Park?
Brooklyn Park lists painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work as building-permit exemptions. Its list keeps a condition for hard-surface floor finishes in apartments, condominiums and other multifamily buildings: the work must comply with sound-transmission ratings. The finish-work entry is distinct from the city’s structural-work permit rule.

The city also lists one-story detached accessory structures no larger than 200 square feet among projects without a building permit that may still need zoning or Public Works action. Its low-deck exemption has separate height, attachment and exit-door conditions. These are specific exemptions, rather than a statement that a project has no other city requirements.
How much is a permit and how long does it take in Brooklyn Park?
City government permit fee method
The city’s residential fee method depends on the project type: some calculations use square footage and others use a fixed value. The application must include the value of materials and labor. Consult the city fee page for that method; a construction valuation listed there is not the amount charged for a permit.
Building Permit and plan review fees for Residential projects are based on the project type, some are calculated by the square foot and others have been given a fixed value. A value of work which includes material and labor must always be placed on the permit application.

Brooklyn Park asks applicants to allow five to seven business days for residential plan review and says summer construction-season waits are longer. It says some residential re-siding, re-roofing, window and door replacement permits can be issued the same day. These are different processes; the same-day statement is tied to the listed replacement permits.
Please allow five (5) to seven (7) business days for plan review, during the summer construction season wait times will be longer.

Before you apply in Brooklyn Park: checklist
For a deck application, prepare the detailed plan and the site plan or survey together. The plan must be legible and drawn to scale; the site plan must show lot dimensions, property lines, and distances from property lines to existing and proposed structures. The city requires the site plan or survey to be uploaded with the plans.
Homeowners reach the city’s application process through Electronic Permit Application. The deck requirements are available through Deck. Read 31 October 2026.
For an existing house, the city’s FAQ says building plans are stored for 1 year and may no longer be held afterward. It notes that some plans may be retained by the designer or builder. That retention statement concerns building plans; the portal separately offers property permit history.
