Oklahoma City permit search: look up, apply and check a permit

Oklahoma City building permits are looked up in the city's OKC Development, Permitting and Licensing Portal, where a General Search by site address or permit number needs no account and reaches permit records back to 1983. On when you need one, the city says: “Permits are required when you construct, alter, repair, enlarge, move or demolish any primary or accessory structure.” Search permits on the OKC Citizen Portal

Oklahoma City permit records

Older permits sit in the same search. The default date range covers the most current 12 years, you can change those dates to whatever range you need, and the city's permit records go back to 1983. Searching records takes no account; an account is needed to apply for permits other than a garage sale permit, and for inspections.

An account is not necessary if you wish to search for records or apply for a garage sale permit. However, an account will be required if you wish to apply for other permits and inspections.

Oklahoma City permit status

To follow a permit you already hold, look it up by its permit number in the General Search. Once you have the permit and its required inspections list, inspections for building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing work are scheduled online, through the automated phone system (IVR) or by text message (SelecTXT), and the city's Inspections page offers the inspection history.

You're ready for inspections after you have received a required inspections list along with your permit. Normal inspection hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In the OKC Development, Permitting and Licensing Portal, you can find information and apply for such things as permits, licenses, planning cases, fire burn permits, work zone permits, and schedule inspections.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Oklahoma City?

Yes, fences have their own permit. The Development Center lists fence permits among the construction plans it reviews, and the city posts residential fence requirements with its residential permits. A homeowner who builds the fence can submit the permit; otherwise a fence contractor submits it.

Around a residential swimming pool, the pool checklist asks you to show the fence enclosure:

Show location, type, and height of fence enclosure. (4’ minimum height with self-closing and self-latching gates)

Do I need a permit to repair or replace a roof in Oklahoma City?

Yes, above a size. As of August 1, 2025, re-roofing an existing one- or two-family home or duplex takes a re-roofing permit when the work covers more than 500 square feet, and replacing structural members such as rafters or ridge beams takes a building permit. The city's re-roofing checklist adds that only single-family dwellings and duplexes need a permit to re-roof, and that patching lost or damaged shingles needs one only when the repair area exceeds 500 square feet.

As of August 1, 2025, the re-roofing of an existing one-and two-family dwelling or duplex will require a re-roofing permit where the scope of work exceeds 500 square feet in area. Furthermore, the replacement or alteration of any structural members such as rafters, ridge beams, etc. will require a building permit.

Before you request the inspection, the checklist asks for photos uploaded to the permit: the existing roof before tear-off, the decked roof after flashing and any ice and water shield, and the finished roof. The inspection itself is scheduled through the Citizens Portal from your account.

Yes. Installing a storm shelter above or below ground takes a building permit, applied for online. Can a homeowner pull their own permit in Oklahoma City?

Yes, for building work you do yourself. A residential building permit applied for by the homeowner goes in with the city's homeowner's exemption form, a certificate in which you state that you own the property and will be doing the construction or remodeling of the single-family or duplex structure yourself.

Residential building permits being applied for by the homeowner must be submitted along with a homeowner's exemption form(PDF, 219KB).

Source: Plan Review | City of OKC, read 2026-10-30

The certificate relates only to the building construction. Electrical, plumbing and heat and air work still needs its own permits, and the city issues those only to contractors who hold a State of Oklahoma license and are registered with the city.

False information on the certificate may be cause for the building official to suspend or revoke the permit, and the owner may be subject to a penalty under Chapter 12 of the Oklahoma City Municipal Code.
