For homeowners
Types of gutters: which gutter material fits your house?
Choose Aluminum for long seamless sections fabricated on site (University of Illinois, 1990); Steel (galvanized or painted) for stick systems in 10- to 20-foot lengths, for homeowners or small contractors to install (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999); Copper for maritime environments (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999); Vinyl (PVC) for corrosive environments (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999); Wood for more traditional housing, or houses where the shingle style predominates (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999).
The right choice depends on the style of the house, whether the setting is maritime or otherwise corrosive, and who will install the gutters.
| Type | Best for | Main advantages | Main drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminum | long seamless sections fabricated on site (University of Illinois, 1990) | comes as both stick and seamless systems in many color options, and is easily installed (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) | less strong than steel or copper, and can be dented, especially in lighter thickness (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) |
| Steel (galvanized or painted) | stick systems in 10- to 20-foot lengths, for homeowners or small contractors to install (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) | contracts one-half as much as aluminum at equivalent thickness (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) | hot-dipped galvanized gutters are not recommended for maritime environments unless the coil has been pre-coated (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999); painting galvanized steel is difficult (University of Illinois, 1990) |
| Copper | maritime environments (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) | low maintenance; does not require paint (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999); an appropriate material for historic preservation projects (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) | requires skilled installers for cutting and soldering joints and transitions (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) |
| Vinyl (PVC) | corrosive environments (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) | strong and resists dents; will not rust, chip or peel; lightweight and low maintenance (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999); snap-together assembly with a limited number of tools to cut and assemble it (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) | long-term exposure to sunlight may make some types of plastic gutters brittle (University of Illinois, 1990); gutter stock was only available in 10-foot lengths when HUD wrote its guide (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) |
| Wood | more traditional housing, or houses where the shingle style predominates (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) | a strong, straight material that gives a crisp edge detail (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999); the front face can be painted to match adjacent trim (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) | may not be readily available in some areas (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999); heavier than other gutter materials (HUD Rehab Guide, 1999) |
