For homeowners
Types of sprinkler system: which one fits your yard?
Match the type to each area you water: choose Fixed spray head for small lawn areas or strips; Rotor (gear-driven or impact) for large lawn areas; Drip or microirrigation for plants and trees that are spaced somewhat apart.
The right choice depends on the size of each area, its shape, and whether it is lawn or plants and trees spaced apart.
| Type | Best for | Main advantages | Main drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed spray head | small lawn areas or strips | UGA Extension (2017): spray heads are available in numerous configurations so they may be adapted to cover almost any shaped area; EPA WaterSense (2018), comparing it with microirrigation: "turfgrass on lawns, where spray sprinkler systems provide better coverage" | EPA WaterSense (2018): if managed improperly, water from spray sprinklers can form puddles, evaporate, or land in soil beyond plant roots; UGA Extension (2017): spray heads put water down quickly, which may limit their use and length of application in heavy soils or in areas with excessive slopes; UC Master Gardeners (Marin County): spray systems are not good for windy areas, as watering on windy days results in misting |
| Rotor (gear-driven or impact) | large lawn areas | UGA Extension (2017): rotary sprinklers generally cover large areas (a 30- to 50-ft radius) | no official source names one |
| Drip or microirrigation | plants and trees that are spaced somewhat apart | EPA WaterSense: microirrigation delivers water slowly, preventing runoff and reducing evaporation; UF/IFAS Extension (2024): microirrigation's low-volume water output allows for the irrigated area to be concentrated around the plant; UC Master Gardeners (Marin County): drip is good for windy areas, as water is dripped directly into soil, not into the air; UGA Extension (2017): drip is especially suitable for watering individual plants such as shrubs and trees and can also work well for ornamental or vegetable gardens | EPA WaterSense (2018): emitters can become clogged without preventive care; EPA WaterSense (2018): water lines at ground level are susceptible to weed growth, freezing, and damage from landscape work or animals |
