AC repair or replace: which fits your system?
For homeowners
DOE puts the average central air conditioner lifetime at 21.2 years. ENERGY STAR lists a unit more than 10 years old, or one needing frequent repairs while energy bills go up, as a sign it may be time to call a contractor about replacing it. EPA requires certified technicians for AC repair on equipment that could release ozone depleting refrigerants. Updated 27 October 2026

How long it lasts
DOE's 2017 standards rule gives 21.2 years as the national average lifetime of a central air conditioner. HUD's 2000 inspection guide says compressors have a service life of 5 to 15 years, depending on maintenance.

What to put in your request
- What is wrong, in your own words: what you see, hear or smell, and when it started.
- Whether you want a repair or a replacement (or are not sure yet).
- How soon: an emergency, the next few days, or a set timeframe.
- The ZIP code of the home.
- Whether you own or rent the home.
- Photos of the problem area, taken only where you can stand safely.
- A clear photo of the unit's model plate (the data plate or label), if you can reach it safely.
How long does a central air conditioner last?
DOE's 2017 standards rule gives 21.2 years as the national average lifetime of a central air conditioner. HUD's 2000 inspection guide says the compressor, the most critical component, has a service life of 5 to 15 years depending on maintenance.
(U.S. Department of Energy, 2017) (HUD, 2000)
When is it time to replace an AC instead of repairing it?
ENERGY STAR says it may be time to call a contractor about a change when the unit is more than 10 years old, needs frequent repairs while energy bills go up, leaves some rooms too hot or too cold, or the home has humidity problems.
(ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated) (ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated) (ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated) (ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated)
Can you fix an AC yourself or do you need a pro?
ENERGY STAR's maintenance checklist says to inspect, clean or change air filters once a month, and warns a dirty filter can damage equipment. Refrigerant is different: EPA requires technicians who service or repair equipment that could release ozone-depleting refrigerants to be certified.
(ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated) (ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated) (U.S. EPA, 2026)
Is frost on my AC a problem?
It can be. HUD's inspection guide says frost on the indoor coil indicates poor air flow from a dirty coil or a refrigerant deficiency, and frost on the larger line also indicates low refrigerant. It says an HVAC service technician can test the system's overall condition.
(HUD, 2000) (HUD, 2000) (HUD, 2000)
Is a noisy AC a sign it needs replacing?
It can be a sign. ENERGY STAR lists a noisy heating or cooling system among signs it may be time to call a contractor, and HUD's guide says noisy start-up and operation indicates a worn compressor.
(ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated) (HUD, 2000)
