Heat pump repair or replace: which fits your system?
For homeowners
DOE puts the national average heat pump lifetime at 15.3 years. ENERGY STAR lists a heat pump more than 10 years old, or one that needs frequent repairs while energy bills go up, as a sign it may be time to call a contractor about replacing it. EPA requires certified technicians for equipment that could release ozone depleting refrigerants. Updated 27 October 2026

Symptoms: what they can mean, who handles them, how soon
| Symptom | What the source says it can mean | DIY or pro | Urgency |
|---|---|---|---|
| System doesn't reverse | “If the system doesn't reverse, the reversing valve is faulty.” (HUD, 2000) | — | — |
| Frost on the larger line | “Frost on any exposed parts of the larger line also indicates a refrigerant deficiency.” (HUD, 2000) | Pro: “… require that technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release ozone depleting refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified …” (U.S. EPA, 2026) | — |

| Frequent repairs, energy bills going up | “Your equipment needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are going up.” (ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated) | — | — |
| Noisy heating or cooling system | “Your heating or cooling system is noisy.” (ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated) | — | — |
An em dash (—) means the cited source does not specify who should handle the work or how soon.
How long it lasts
DOE's 2017 standards rule gives 15.3 years as the national average heat pump lifetime, from 15.1 to 16.4 years by region.

What to put in your request
- What is wrong, in your own words: what you see, hear or smell, and when it started.
- Whether you want a repair or a replacement (or are not sure yet).
- How soon: an emergency, the next few days, or a set timeframe.
- The ZIP code of the home.
- Whether you own or rent the home.
- Photos of the problem area, taken only where you can stand safely.
- A clear photo of the unit's model plate (the data plate or label), if you can reach it safely.
How long does a heat pump last?
DOE's 2017 standards rule gives 15.3 years as the national average heat pump lifetime. ENERGY STAR lists a heat pump more than 10 years old as one sign it may be time to call a contractor about a change.
(U.S. Department of Energy, 2017) (ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated)
Is ice on my heat pump's outdoor unit a problem?
Not by itself. HUD's 2000 inspection guide says frost or ice may form on the outdoor coil in cold, damp weather and that heat pumps are designed to defrost this build up. Frost on the larger line, it says, indicates a refrigerant deficiency.
(HUD, 2000) (HUD, 2000) (HUD, 2000)
When should you replace a heat pump instead of repairing it?
ENERGY STAR says it may be time to call a contractor about a change when the heat pump is more than 10 years old, needs frequent repairs while energy bills go up, is noisy, or leaves some rooms too hot or too cold.

Can you fix a heat pump yourself?
The filter, yes: ENERGY STAR says to inspect, clean or change air filters once a month. Refrigerant work is not a DIY job: EPA requires technicians who maintain, service or repair equipment that could release ozone-depleting refrigerants to be certified.
(ENERGY STAR (EPA/DOE), undated) (U.S. EPA, 2026)
What does it mean if my heat pump won't switch between heating and cooling?
HUD's inspection guide says that if the system doesn't reverse, the reversing valve is faulty. It says operating failures may also be caused by a faulty heater element, faulty relays or a faulty thermostat.
