What is carpet?

Carpet is a floor covering with yarn on a backing; the yarn surface is called pile. CRI 105 limits residential carpet cushion thickness to 7/16 inch (11 mm). When planning installation, match the cushion to the carpet and ask for an estimate that includes both padding and installation.

What is carpet made of?

Carpet has yarn attached to a backing. Maryland’s consumer guide (read 2026-11-06) calls the yarn surface "the pile" and explains that yarn can be looped rather than cut at the top; density describes how closely its tufts are woven into the backing. (source)

“Yarn woven together on backing is referred to as the pile.” (source) “Density refers to how closely the yarn tufts are woven into the carpet's backing.” (source) “Sometimes the yarn is looped instead of cut at the top.” (source)

How much carpet will my room need?

Carpet quantity starts with room measurements. Maryland’s consumer guide (read 2026-11-06) estimates square yards from length in feet multiplied by width, divided by nine; it says to "Add about 10 percent" for room irregularities and still have the seller measure before signing. (source)

“To determine the approximate amount, multiply the room's length (in feet) by the width and divide by nine.” (source) “Add about 10 percent to your total to account for room irregularities.” (source) “You'll still need to have the area measured by the seller before you sign a contract.” (source)

Do I have to put carpet cushion under my carpet?

Carpet cushion should match the selected carpet’s instructions. CRI 105 (read 2026-11-05) requires cushion to "conform to carpet manufacturer recommendations" for the specific product being installed; its residential installation guidance also limits cushion thickness to 7/16 inch (11 mm). (source)

“It is required that the cushion conform to carpet manufacturer recommendations for the specific product being installed.” (source) “Cushion thickness for Residential carpet installations should not exceed 7/16 inch (11 mm).” (source) “Except for direct glue-down carpet, we recommend always using carpet cushion.” (source)

What are the requirements for carpets and rugs?

Carpet surface flammability is covered by federal rules, including standard 1630. CPSC (read 2026-11-06) identifies 16 C.F.R. part 1630 for carpets and rugs and part 1631 for small carpets and rugs; the standards test exposure to "a small ignition source". (source)

“The Standard for the Surface Flammability of Carpets and Rugs can be found at 16 C.F.R. part 1630.” (source) “The Standard for the Surface Flammability of Small Carpets and Rugs can be found at 16 C.F.R. part 1631.” (source) “The standards provide a test to determine the surface flammability of carpets and rugs when exposed to a small ignition source.” (source)

Are there any requirements for labeling?

Carpet labeling identifies fire-retardant treatment under the rules CPSC cites (read 2026-11-06). A treated carpet, or one made with treated fibers, must carry the T marking. For commercially installed carpet, CPSC allows that marking on the "invoice or other paper" related to the carpet. (source)

“Yes, as stated in 16 C.F.R. §§ 1630.5 and 1631.5(b), if the carpet or rug has had a fire-retardant treatment or is made of fibers that have had a fire-retardant treatment, it must be labeled with the letter “T.” The letter “T” should be legible and conspicuous on the label and/or invoice or other paper related to the carpet and rug, if commercially installed.” (source)
