What is insulation?

Insulation is material that slows heat flow through a home's ceilings, walls, and floors. Compare products at equal R-values, the ratings for resistance to heat flow. Fit matters: DOE illustrates R-19 batts rated for 6¼ inches squeezed into a 5½-inch cavity as a case of lost performance.

What this means for your home project

  1. Check the product label against the location you intend to insulate; keep the label showing its intended application. Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-11-06.
  2. Measure reachable attic insulation with a ruler or tape measure and note its depth in inches. Source: ENERGY STAR, read 2026-11-06.
  3. Request attic-floor air sealing before insulation in the written scope, so the order of work is explicit. Source: ENERGY STAR, read 2026-11-06.
  4. Ask for insulation baffles in the written estimate; identify those rafter vents as a separate scope item. Source: ENERGY STAR, read 2026-11-06.

What does R-value mean?

R-value describes how strongly insulation resists heat flow. ENERGY STAR (read 2026-10-30) calls it a measure of the ability to "resist heat traveling through it"; a higher number means better thermal performance for the insulation. (source)

“R-Value is a measure of insulation’s ability to resist heat traveling through it.” (source) “The higher the R-Value the better the thermal performance of the insulation.” (source)

Which kind of insulation is best?

Insulation selection needs an equal-R-value comparison and a fit that preserves that rating. DOE (read 2026-11-06) warns compressed insulation "will not give you its full rated R-value"; its R-19 example puts a 6¼-inch batt into a 5½-inch cavity. (source)

“Whenever you compare insulation products, it is critical that you base your comparison on equal R-values.” (source) “Insulation which is compressed will not give you its full rated R-value.” (source) “It also happens if you place batts rated for one thickness into a thinner cavity, such as placing R-19 insulation rated for 6¼ inches into a 5½ inch wall cavity.” (source)

Do I need more attic insulation?

Attic insulation that reaches only the floor joists is a sign you probably need more. ENERGY STAR (read 2026-11-06) identifies insulation "at or below the level of the floor joists" as the cue, and recommends recording the depth to compare with recommended levels. (source)

“If the insulation is at or below the level of the floor joists in your attic, you probably need to add more.” (source) “Record your measurement so you can determine how much more insulation you need to achieve the recommended levels.” (source)

Can I add new insulation on top of old insulation?

New insulation can usually go over existing attic insulation, according to ENERGY STAR (read 2026-11-06). The exception is material that is "wet, moldy, smelly, or contains animal waste"; the agency says removal is usually unnecessary outside those conditions. (source)

“Unless your old insulation is wet, moldy, smelly, or contains animal waste, contractors can just add new insulation on top.” (source) “It is usually not necessary to remove existing insulation.” (source)

What factors affect the cost of insulation installation?

Insulation installation cost can depend on access to the work area. Vermont Energy Saver (read 2026-11-06) says areas "harder to access" may justify staging insulation upgrades until another improvement project opens them up; consider that access issue when planning the scope. (source)

“For spots that are harder to access, it may be more cost effective to stage upgrades until another improvement project opens those areas of the building.” (source)
