What are structural insulated panels?
Structural insulated panels (SIPs) are factory-made building panels with a foam insulation core between structural faces. They form walls, floors or roofs; a typical panel has 4- to 8-inch-thick foam insulation. Because some panels need a crane, include unloading and lifting arrangements when scoping a SIP installation.

What considerations do you need to take into account when building with SIPs vs. conventional framing?
Panel size changes the handling plan: SIPA distinguishes hand-set 8- by 4-foot panels from larger panels needing equipment. PNNL also identifies having roof panels and crews ready as a way to limit crane rigging time. Include unloading, staging and lifting arrangements in the written scope. “Although smaller 8- by 4-foot panels can be set by hand, larger 8- by 24-foot panels require the use of equipment to unload and set.” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04. “Have the roof panels and crews in place so that once the crane arrives and the beam is placed, the roof panel placement can commence immediately, so that rigging time and costs are minimized.” Source: Building America Solution Center, PNNL, read 2026-11-04.
How important is ventilation?
Airtight SIP construction can require controlled fresh-air ventilation, according to DOE. SIPA describes ventilation as bringing fresh air in and exhausting stale, moisture-laden air; plan it alongside the building enclosure rather than treating it as a panel feature. “Because a SIPs structure is so airtight, it may require controlled fresh-air ventilation for safety, health, and performance, and to meet many building codes.” Source: U.S. Department of Energy, read 2026-11-04. “Ventilation systems bring fresh air into the building in controlled amounts and exhaust moisture laden and stale air to the outside.” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04.
How are electrical wiring and fixtures installed?
Wiring runs through channels called chases inside the foam core. SIPA says these are formed during manufacturing from the home’s electrical design, so PNNL recommends completing the electrical plan before the panels are fabricated. “Electrical wires are pulled through pre-cut channels inside the core of the panels called “chases.”” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04. “Chases are added during the manufacturing process according to the electrical design of the home.” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04. “Make sure the electrical plan is complete and reflected in the panel cut drawings sent to you for your approval prior to panel fabrication.” Source: Building America Solution Center, PNNL, read 2026-11-04.
Are SIPs accepted by building codes?
SIPA points to Section R610 of the 2018 International Residential Code for residential SIP wall construction. That is a specific edition and wall-system scope; use it as a question for the project’s code review, alongside the manufacturer’s wall and seam specifications. “For residential buildings, specific construction practices for SIP wall systems are included in Section R610 of the 2018 International Residential Code.” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04. “Design and construct SIP walls according to manufacturer’s specifications.” Source: Building America Solution Center, PNNL, read 2026-11-04. “Seal all seams between SIPs following manufacturer's specifications.” Source: Building America Solution Center, PNNL, read 2026-11-04.
Can SIPs be replaced or repaired if damaged?
Damage needs assessment before choosing repair or replacement. SIPA calls for a structural engineer to distinguish cosmetic from structural damage, and says the extent of damage determines whether panel modification or replacement provides the structural solution. “If panels are damaged, a structural engineer needs to assess the damage to determine what is cosmetic and what is structural.” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04. “If the damage is structural, then the source of the problem must be identified and a structural solution to the problem must be found.” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04. “That can be done by either a site modification of the panels or replacement of the panels, depending on the extent of the damage.” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04.
What is the R-value of SIPs?
The SIP’s thickness and core material both affect its R-value, according to SIPA. Compare those two panel specifications when discussing the insulation rating; a thickness description alone leaves out the material factor named in the FAQ. “R-values for SIPs depend on the thickness of the SIP and the type of core material that is used.” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04.
Are SIPs compatible with other building systems?
A project can combine SIPs and conventional framing. SIPA gives two examples: SIP walls with a conventional truss roof, or stick-framed walls with a SIP roof. The choice can therefore apply to the walls or roof separately. “Builders may choose to build with SIP walls and a conventional truss roof or with stick walls and a SIP roof with little difficulty.” Source: Structural Insulated Panel Association, read 2026-11-04.
