How long does brick last?
Brick and stone exterior walls have an anticipated life exceeding 100 years in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) 2002 housing durability report, citing 1993 estimates. This figure covers exterior walls, not the entire house. Brick veneer has a separate lifetime label, explained below.

NIST’s September 2002 housing report reproduces a 1993 estimate of 100+ years for brick and stone exterior walls. Its footnote defines the plus sign as exceeding that figure (US; n not published by the source). The table below retains that open-ended estimate.
| Type | Measure | Figure | Area | Data years | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brick and stone exterior walls | Historical anticipated life; exceeds stated value (100+) | 100 years | US | 1993 estimates; September 2002 report | NIST, Baseline Measures for Improving Housing Durability (September 2002), read 2026-11-04, n not published by the source. |

For work on brick exterior walls, you can describe the job on InstaBids and compare contractors’ written bids.
Is brick worth it?
The published facts pair a long wall-life estimate with ongoing upkeep: NIST reports over 100 years for brick and stone walls, while the Brick Industry Association recommends seasonal inspections in its 2017 guidance. Those describe durability and maintenance commitments rather than a purchase verdict.
You can describe a brick wall project on InstaBids, then compare written bids for the work you want done.
Signs of the end
The Brick Industry Association’s 2017 checklist names “Spalled units” and “Deteriorated mortar joints”. These are inspection findings, not a calendar deadline for the wall.
You can include brick surface damage and mortar concerns when describing your masonry job on InstaBids for written bids.
What makes brick last longer?
In its 2017 guidance, the Brick Industry Association recommends seasonal inspections and inspection of weeps for outward drainage of moisture.
For brick drainage or maintenance work, you can post the scope on InstaBids and compare contractors’ written bids.
Repair or replace
The Brick Industry Association’s 2017 guidance links mortar repair to uncontrolled water penetration after other causes are eliminated. Broken or heavily spalled bricks admitting moisture may need individual replacement; neither condition sets a whole-wall replacement age.
You can describe the affected brick units and mortar joints on InstaBids so contractors bid in writing on that scope.
Questions
How long do brick houses last?
NIST’s 2002 report assigns brick and stone exterior walls an anticipated life exceeding 100 years. That is a wall-component estimate reproduced from 1993 data, not a forecast for the entire house or its other systems.

How long can a brick house last?
The same NIST table gives fireplace and brick veneer a lifetime label. NIST defines lifetime as the “life expectancy of the housing unit”. That row therefore has no fixed numeric endpoint and cannot be converted into another brick-wall year count.

How long does brick last on a house?
The wall estimate does not remove upkeep. The Brick Industry Association’s 2017 guidance recommends seasonal inspections and inspecting weeps “so that moisture within the walls is drained to the exterior”. Brick, mortar and drainage require separate observations.
